NHMS thoughts

Congratulations to Greg Biffle for winning the Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
Here are a few thoughts of the race:
-- Kyle Busch had some bad luck early on when he had some sort of bolt break. To make matters worse, later in the race he spun and Jamie McMurray hit him. He finished 34th and was the biggest loser in the point standings. Not a very good start for the Chase for Busch. He left the track immediately following the race and wouldn't speak to anyone.
-- Tony Stewart was too fast on pit road and had to do a pass through penalty, which put him a lap down for most of the race. He was the beneficiary of the lucky dog when Joe Nemechek wrecked on the front stretch though. He ended his day with an 8th place finish. He also left the track immediately following the race and wouldn't to speak to anyone.
-- Clint Bowyer, the favorite to win, finished in 12th place. He also left the track immediately following the race and wouldn't speak to anyone.
-- Joey Logano didn't do squat during the race. Maybe it was nerves. Maybe it was the car. I am sure he will do much better than this next year in his permanent ride.
-- Funny stuff... Johnny Sauter left his pit stall and went around the track with the tire jack attached to the driver's side of his car. He had to go back down pit road to give it back to his crew. I'm not so sure they showed that on television but wanted to share.
-- Ryan Newman dropped a cyclinder and finished 36th.
-- My pick for the race, Kevin Harvick came in 10th.
What did you think of the race?

Good old school, fender banging race. It's about time. There was hardly a car left without a mark on it.McCumbee, Sauter, Hornish and Menard were looking to wreck. Menard got away, but the other 3 finally succeeded.
Great comeback for Tony after going a lap down.
Congrats to Greg Biffle. He's a nice guy and has come so close and had such bad luck the beginning of the year.

Great race. So glad the weather cleared so the race could be held. It was nice to see a hard working driver win. I don't think anyone looks to crash, even when they are trying too hard. Their inexperience and heart might get them into trouble, but no one likes to see the underdogs crash and have to leave a race. Not even Kyle, who certainly is not an underdog, but the driver everyone loves to hate. He had a tough day. This was my first Nascar race to attend, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. I did find it sad that people booed drivers like Michael Waltrip, when he was introduced, though. Leave him alone. He will decide when to leave racing. Some of us are successful at what we do and some are out there trying everyday, but never make it. Holding it against JR because he moved from his father's company, which left his wife in control, to a reputable organization like Hendrick, shouldn't be held against him. He should be respected for moving on, leaving the dead father's wife alone, and trying to make a success of himself elsewhere. I am surpised that some of our bloggers would feel this way about him. Maybe I am missing something. I would love feedback on this. Because I am fairly new to (Nascar) racing, my opinion is not always respected. However, I am a pretty smart cookie.Technical knowledge and driver trivia is NICE but not everything. Don't impose that knowledge on me and look down on me because you think I am not very smart when it comes to Nascar. Thanks for understanding.

I thought it was Logano who left pit road with the tire iron attached, in which case it was shown in slo-mo.
Congrats, Biffle, good race!
From Jen: It did happen to Johnny Sauter. Only, Sauter went around the entire racetrack with it attached to his car. They took it off when he made it back to his pit stall. Logano's fell off in the pits before he went out on the track.

Logano left his pit dragging the jack, but it fell off on pit road.

I don't understand the booing mentality either except in some cases. The drivers I feel bad for though, are the ones that get no reaction whatsoever from the fans.
Though I've never done it, Mikey deserves to be booed. He isn't very nice to the race fans unless there's some PR attached to it and sometimes not even then.
Interesting note about Jr. Rick Hendrick has been on the radio with him the past 3 races coaching him along so he'll calm down and leave Eury, Jr alone.

If Mikey is not nice to the fans, then he it is justified to boo. I am not against booing as I think it is part of the whole scene, but just don't understand it in some cases. I think JR overreacts to a lot of things when he is in a race and I am aware Hendrick has been trying to "talk" to him during the race. I just want JR to get a fair shake as far as how people sit in judgement of him. He is under constant pressure to perform because of his father and his own record. When he transitioned to Hendrick's camp, it increased the pressure. Each driver has his plusses and minuses but I think JR is one of the most honest and fair drivers.

I think it's about time Hendrick stepped in. I always thought going to HMS would be good for both Rick and Jr with the losses they suffered.

I don't necessarily agree that Jr is one of the most honest and fair. He puts a lot of pressure on his crew chief and team to make his race finishes better. He needs to get up on the wheel more often. He is in the best equipment available. He is expected to perform and so far he hasn't lived up to the expectations. Other teams with less are doing more.
Speaking of Waltrip, I laughed at something they did during the telecast on Sunday, since I apparently was the only one on here NOT at the track. They had eight in-car cameras in use on Sunday. Seven of them were in chase contender cars. The last one was in Waltrip's car. Why? It's always in the middle of the action.

Typical boring race at NH. I remember now why I haven't gone for 10 years. Track needs to banked about 20 degrees in the turns. Only reason I went was because I had pit passes. I'll stick to Britol or Richmond from now on.

Camera was not only in Mikey's car because he's always in the middle of some action, but also because he is a media darling.
dbragg, contact NHMS through their website and tell them we want banking. The GM's email address is on the NHMS website. Believe it or not, Smith's organization actually listens to the fans.

Well, dbragg, the word is that Smith likes Louden just the way it is and changes to the track style itself are not on the agenda in the near future.
The only improvement that might be made is to add lights for night racing, but I believe it was in the contract with the town not to have any night racing, so they will have to get around that somehow.
You can email your opinion anyway.

racefan: I thought our discussion on Sunday implicated that Smith wanted to move the seating to the other side of the track? What happened?

That was reported in an earlier blog when Jen went to the meeting with Gappens in, I think, July.
What is being reported is that they are not changing the configuration of the track itself. They are leaving it flat with the same size and shape. Does not mean that they might not flip the stretches, add lights, or whatever. Wouldn't surprise me a bit if they added seating to both sides, but I think that would be really foolish right now with the falling attendance.

Rig up the lights for July race. That would be awesome. This years race was great and my new seats on the beginning of the dtraight away from turn four were good too. Got to see Kenseth get crunched up close. Also got to see one of the parking attendants carted off by the police for OUI on a golf cart near the water tower. Don't drink and drive!
