HARSH penalities for JGR's 18 and 20 Nationwide teams
Penalties have been handed out by NASCAR for Joe Gibbs Racing's No. 18 and No. 20 teams in the Nationwide Series....and they are HARSH. Both teams were caught using magnetic spacers under their gas pedals. The spacers wouldn't allow the gas pedals to be depressed fully so that it would skew the horsepower results on the dynamometer test.
Both drivers, Joey Logano and Tony Stewart have been penalized 150 driver points and are on NASCAR probation until Dec. 31, 2008. Owner, Joe Gibbs has been penalized 150 owner points for each of the cars.
The crew chiefs, Jason Ratcliff with the No. 18 and Dave Rogers with the No. 20, each were fined $50,000 and have been indefinitely suspended from NASCAR.
Team members of the No. 18 that were penalized: car chief Dorian Thorsen, engine tuner Michael Johnson and crew member Toby Bigelow have been suspended indefinitely from NASCAR.
Team members of the No. 20: car chief Richard Bray and engine tuner Dan Bajek have been suspended indefinitely from NASCAR.
In addition, the entire teams for both cars have been placed on NASCAR probation until December 31, 2008.

Too bad. These teams have been around for a long time and you would think they would realize the consequences of fooling with rules pertaining to the car. I really don't feel sorry for them. That is not to say I don't realize all teams push the limit.Stupid. Too much to lose. I believe in following the rules and hoping for the best. May the best man (and car) win.

I'm getting sick of Nascar's treatment of the Toyota teams, or more specifically, Gibbs. Since when is gaining a competitive advantage a crime? The magnets did not have any bearing on the race, theirfore should not have caused a points reduction (for teams not racing for points!) or such a significant suspension.
What about other teams' advantages? What about "Hendricks horsepower"? What about the sway bar that Jack Roush through a fit about when Waltrip stole it? What about the special shocks that Hendricks used at Dover a couple of years ago?
All of these are competition advantages that lead to wins and yet there are no points or penalties for any of them. If the Toyota engine fits the template mandated by Nascar, where is Gibbs cheating?
This season I have enjoyed watching Kyle make history, Logano win, and Tony finish a strong Gibbs Nationwide run. Even more so, I really enjoyed Dave Rogers set that 20 car up so masterfully that it can be driven to the front EVERY week, with any driver. Nascar is doing a great disservice to the future of the Sprint Cup by bring these penalties against a team with no precedent of cheating.

The magnets did not have a bearing on the race. They may however have had and impact on the dyno test nascar was getting ready to perform. Nascar was trying to see if the previous motor rule changes they made, had made a difference. Tampering with test results have been cheating since I was in grammar school.
I also seem to recall the 48 team having to race with out their primary crew chief. Tony Jr sat out a handful, the 1 team just got docked 150 pts and how about Robby Gordon before daytona not so long ago.
Im sure it seems like your being picked on when its your favorite team, but Nascar hammers everyone they can catch.
JGR just needs to get better at not getting caught. The way Kyle had been running, I thought they were already pretty good at it.

Sounds like the cheating student is now the teacher.
I agree with justracethecar.
It's not cheating, it's taking advantage of the gray areas.
Maybe JGR can use those magnets to help keep body panels on this weekend at Bristol.
Anyone notice who won the truck race??

It's not the team that Nascar is attacking that bothers me, it's the way and the reason that it's being done. Tony Jr. sat out because they modified a rear wing support. Chad Knaus had an illegal car at a plate track. Those are all areas that Nascar has said that they will penalize heavily for. Gibbs is just looking for self preservation. When is Nascar going to realize that the talent on the team is the primary reason they are winning? Nascar will not be happy until they strip so much power that the Gibbs team finishes mid pack in every race.

Nascar did not provoke this beating. JGR tried to snooker Nascar during a routine dyno test at the end of the race. The JGR cars were not the only cars called to the dyno. They were however the only cars trying to influence the results. If JGR was as confident as son of racefan is about there talent there would have been no penalty.

Clearly they were trying to hide their horsewpwer by putting the magnets there; the infraction was not for putting a magnet or coke bottle there; it was for putting something there that made the horsepower tests results WRONG.

I disagree. Nascar did provoke this by singling out Toyota engines and Gibbs racing. If other drivers (Carl Edwards) are staying competitive with the "old" engine, but Nascar ultimately wants them to swap to a new engine, why would they do it knowing that all of the horsepower gained will be restricted? I think Nascar made its bed when it allowed the new engine, and should leave it be. It will encourage the other teams to try harder.
