Random thoughts: All-Star Race

Kahne051808_1.jpg

I wasn't all that impressed with the racing last night. There was no bumping and banging or anything like that, which is what I expect at a non-points race. I think the three hours or so of pre-race festivities was much more exciting.

Congratulations to Kasy Kahne for winning the million bucks and bragging rights. I hope they didn't keep him in victory lane too long. With all the Budweiser he was drinking, I bet he would have started slurring his words in no time. He just doesn't fit the image I have in my head of a Budweiser beer drinker to me...

Here are a few other random thoughts about yesterday's festivities at Lowe's Motor Speedway:

-- The burnout competition was definitely entertaining. Greg Biffle was the only driver to go out there and follow the "rules." He was also the winner so congrats to him for winning the $10,000, which he is putting towards the Greg Biffle Foundation. The foundation donates money to no-kill animal shelters.

I loved how Jimmie Johnson just went out there and did his own thing. He was doing multiple donuts, going in the wrong direction and blowing out cones. He really didn't follow any rules and it was just fun to watch. It was not what I would have expected from him which is probably why I thought he was so funny.

When Kevin Harvick finished, he stuck the nose of his car right up against the wall and roasted the tires.

Kyle Busch didn't mind the boos from the crowd. When he finished, he climbed out of his car in the middle of all the smoke and stood up on the door of the car and took a bow to the crowd, which he is becoming famous for.

-- I could listen to Kenny Wallace talk all day long. His laugh is contagious.

-- During driver introductions, I could have done without the drums. I don't think it added any WOW factor to that part of the show.

-- What on earth was AJ Allmendinger thinking? During driver introductions, most drivers shook their team’s hands or patted the guys on the back. What did Allmendinger do? He chest bumped each of his teammates. To make matters worse, he is so short that he had to almost get a running start to launch himself up to reach the chests of his teammates. It was definitely entertaining.

-- I loved seeing Dale Jarrett drive the UPS truck around the track. I mean really, how much has everyone been wanting to see that?! I have had this deep desire to see it since the very first commercial...

-- And I don't care who you are, you had to have tears in your eyes when you saw Jarrett wipe his own tears away after the National Anthem was sung.

-- That Gray Ghost paint scheme on Dale Earnhardt Jr's. car was HOT.

-- Poor Kyle Busch finally had some bad luck due to engine failure. Lucky for him no points were involved.

-- The best racing last night was between Matt Kenseth and Junior in the third feature. Great side by side racing.

-- Humpy Wheeler was wrong in his prediction last night. He had picked Carl Edwards to win it. So Humpy is now 11 out of 18. Maybe next year Humpy.

What did you think of the day's events?

Boring. Didn't live up to the hype. I prefer the older format anyway, except they used to introduce each team member and that took forever. Glad they left that out but I wish they had left the hometowns in when putting the crews' names up there. Lots of New England guys down there.

I had the same thought with Allmendinger. He's very short.

Kyle's intro made me nervous until they all took a bow. Knowing Kyle, anything could have happened.

That also made me sad to see DJ go. The Jarret's have always been the class of the field. I am happy to know DJ will be on board for broadcasting.

A lot of emotional moments. Poor racing, though. I am beginning to understand your point about JR., racefan. He needs to decide what his priorities are and GO for it! I thought Edwards in the commentator role was great. I like him.

I liked Edwards commentary too.

I keep hoping to see something from Jr, but so far, I don't.

AJ Allmendinger in an "All Star" race? WTF???

Allmendinger is 10 times the driver Greg Biffle is, 100 times the driver Jamie McMurray is. He's just not one of the chosen one's. Put Allmendinger in equal equipment and he gives any of the Hendrick Boys and most of the Roush Boys a run.

I do believe that Allmendinger hasnt shown us all his cards yet,but.... I'm not particularly a Biffle fan, but Allmendinger has a lot to prove before you can compare those two. Lately I would probably say Allmendigers equipment is better than Biffles. All that being said, fan or not, you have to admit he was pretty funny looking during his intro.

Allmendinger is in a top Toyota team. He has good equipment. What he doesn't have is good experience in a stock car. He was rushed through the ranks and drives like he has been rushed.
I'm not a Biffle fan or a McMurray fan, but until Allmendinger wins a race, or even qualifies on a regular basis, he is still a backmarker. He is not an Allstar.
Regardless, he still looked funny trying to chestbump his crew.

About this blog:
I am hopeful that this will be a place where people can air their two cents' worth about a race, catch up on the gossip and share their opinions on the rules and regulations of NASCAR. I have always felt that there has been a need for such a place in Maine and that this blog helps to fill the void.
