How do you feel about the No. 3 car's return?

car2.jpg

There seems to be a lot of emotion around the return of the No. 3 car. It has been gone since the death of Dale Earnhardt in 2001. Some people are upset and want the number permanantly retired. I personally don't mind seeing it return.

It was announced last week that Richard Childress' grandson, Austin Dillon, will be driving it in the Camping World East Series this year.

I was a huge Dale Earnhardt fan. I am pleased that the number has been out of sight for a while. I wouldn't have wanted to see it back on the track a year or two or maybe even three years after his death. But it has been seven years. I think it's time the No. 3 car returns to racing.

How do you feel about it?

I don't want it back. I saw the paint job on that car and it looks too much like the old one.

Sr once told Boris to go ahead and get in the car and take it for a spin and Said refused. And at the All Star race a couple of years ago when Nascar wanted to honor past champions, they couldn't get anyone to drive the 3 until finally Richard Childress said he'd do it.

Childress says he's going to see how the fans react when they see the car, then he will make a decision about whether to race it again or ask Nascar to retire it. Maybe if they painted it red or something different than black, it might be more tolerable.

Ask me no question, I'll tell you no lies.

But considering you did... Pfft!

It's just a number, and the #3 was hardly exclusive to Sr.

I think a simple solution would be to have a mandatory rule to retire a number after a driver's death, if he won a championship in his career with that particular number. What is the big deal? There are plenty of numbers to go around

If there were ever a number to be retired, it's # 3. Hang it up!

I think it is great!!! It is time for the number to come back on the track. SR would have wanted that. Plus it is not a Sprint Cup car it is a Campers World Car.. so that is different.
Sr would love to see his best friends Grandson Austin driving the car. And having a fantastic person owning the car our own Andy Santerre... What a better comnbination...
Yes change the paint color... but let the number and the car back on the track. I can't wait to see it race again...

I think it's time. I never thought I'd say that, but I think it would be a good thing. Tears will flow but they will be tears of joy to see #3 on the track again......

The plan is to eventually move up to Nationwide and Sprint.

Retire the number.

Rumors are flying today regarding a big announcement from Tony Stewart. They say it has something to do with car #4. News is expected to come sometime today. Don't know how truthful that rumor is.

Retire the number, it's Dale's number and that's that.

Before I get started, is anyone else having trouble with the Maine Today Blog site?

The Dale Earnhardt I remember was a fearless competitor on the track. He also had a great eye for racing talent. So why is everyone else so scared that a young driver may come out and actually do something in a car marked number 3? Dale wouldn't be.

The cars have changed style. The Goodwrench sponsorship is gone. There would be little recognizable of a Dale Sr car. I miss seeing him on the track as much as anyone. I don't think retiring his number is the way to honor his legacy.

And the Camping World Series is a loooooong way from Sprint Cup.

FROM JEN: Yes, there are issues with posting comments, you are not the only one. As far as I can tell, it's sporadic but the powers that be are aware there are issues. I am sorry. As ridiculous as this is going to sound... I can't even post a normal comment. I have to modify your entry to respond....uugh.

This number belongs to Dale Sr. and no one can live up to the legend that he was, this number needs to be retired.

First of all, I think Dale Sr would be having a fit over the COT, but he could take a piece of junk and make something out of it.And secondly, he might have wanted the car back racing, but he would have had high expectations for the driver. Childress was never very good. That's why he quit and hired Dale.

I have alot of good memories watching Dale race, but the first one that pops into my head every time I see that car is his final crash at Daytona. That was one of the saddest days in Nascar.

About this blog:
I am hopeful that this will be a place where people can air their two cents' worth about a race, catch up on the gossip and share their opinions on the rules and regulations of NASCAR. I have always felt that there has been a need for such a place in Maine and that this blog helps to fill the void.
