Extra Curricular Activities

I am really surprised that owners of teams don’t take a tougher stance when it comes to allowing their drivers to race in other forms of racing. Last weekend, Carl Edwards got in a wreck in a Late Model event and supposedly dislocated his thumb. What if it had been more serious, such as breaking his leg?

Driving in a Cup or Busch race is risky enough for injury.

Remember when Dale Earnhardt Sr. broke his collarbone and cracked his sternum racing at Talladega? Do you remember that he still raced at Watkins Glen, two races later? He pulled off a sixth-place finish despite his injuries. That was classic. I will never forget that race.

Safety has come a long way since that Talladega race in 1996, but injuries still do happen. I'm just not sure that it is a wise decision for NASCAR drivers to risk injuries in fringe races.

These guys are on the road and in the air all of the time who's to say when they could have an accident. I like them going to different races like they do when they come up to OPS.

At Talladega, some of them race on the dirt track on Saturday night in the Spring. This after they race Saturday on the speedway and they have to race on Sunday.

If I remember correctly, Earnhardt Sr also won the pole for that road course race with his broken collarbone which was more amazing than how he finished.

hhmmm....a qualifying lap or two versus an entire road course race with a broken collarbone. Yeah, you're right, it's more amazing that he qualified on the pole.

I LOVE SEEING THE NASCAR GUYS AT OTHER RACING VENUES, ESPECIALLY ON THEIR OFF WEEKENDS. BUT I DO AGREE THAT IT IS VERY RISKY. I WOULD NOT WANT TO SEE ANY OF THEM GET INJURED. HAVING SAID THAT...THOSE NASCAR BOYS ARE SOME VERY TOUGH COOKIES, THERE HAVE MANY OF THEM THAT HAVE GOTTEN HURT ON OR OFF THE RACE TRACK THAT HAVE STILL RACED THE NEXT WEEKEND AND PULLED OFF SOME VERY REMARKABLE FINISHES AND WINS. MARK MARTIN, DALE SR., GREGG BIFFLE, JUST TO NAME A FEW.

Racing is what they do. Alot of them have their own backyard tracks.

And besides, they could get injured playing golf: Re: Jimmy Johnson.

These guys are every day average guys. If I was a race driver I would stay right out of helicopters, stick to planes and cars- maybe even walk to the track. Put myself up in one of them "boy in a bubble" type devices.Wrap myself in bubble wrap, wear bullet proof vest and helmut, life jackets and have a medical team standing by.

About this blog:
I am hopeful that this will be a place where people can air their two cents' worth about a race, catch up on the gossip and share their opinions on the rules and regulations of NASCAR. I have always felt that there has been a need for such a place in Maine and that this blog helps to fill the void.
