Welcome to the Sunrise Herald with Giselle Goodman, the place to go to get the news from overnight and onward...
––––––––––––

tiny_smiley_sad.png Of note this morning: A sad goodbye to a humor hero today. George Carlin, the man who made us belly laugh with his crude, yet truthful jokes, and even made children smile with his perfectly-timed "Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends" narration, died in California last night of heart failure. He was 71. Click here to read the full Associated Press story.

IN THE WEATHER

storm.png

At 9 a.m., downtown Portland was under gray skies at 65 degrees.

Get ready for another unsettled day with some thunderstorms currently in and around Bangor, and others moving into York, Cumberland and lower Oxford counties by mid-afternoon.

The sky will remain cloudy until the boomers arrive. They are currently just southwest of us, as noted on the radar shot below. Some will bring heavy, damaging winds and possibly even big chunks of hail.

cloudycloudy.jpg From Mark in Brunswick: Little warmer than last week when each day we awoke to overcast skies with the chance of a shower, but even though it's 63 outside, it looks like rain is on its way.
cloudycloudy.jpg From Shawn in Yarmouth: This morning it is 65 degrees and very damp and humid. A very light wind is blowing. It is gray, cloudy and wet.

THE NEWEST NEWS:

OXFORD (AP) _ Maine's newest museum looks a lot like a gas station.

That's because Lamb's Antique Gas Station Museum, which opened to the public over the weekend, is dedicated to anything to do with Shell gasoline.

Jim Lamb's grandfather once owned a Shell station in West Paris, and Lamb caught the memorabilia bug after somebody gave him a key chain that had his grandfather's Shell station logo on it.

After that, he began collecting Shell collectibles ranging from old gas pumps and oil can racks to matchbooks, oil filters and cans of Shell brake fluid and antifreeze.

He and his wife even set up a re-creation of a vintage Shell station next to their mobile home parts business, Parts & Pieces, on Route 26. Friends and family gathered for a grand opening on Saturday night. The museum is free, but donations are accepted.

MINOT (AP)— Authorities are reviewing an accident at a central Maine motorcycle track that fatally injured a Massachusetts man.

Maine State Police say 36-year-old Dan Arnold of Southwick, Mass., died June 15 at Central Maine Medical Center after sustaining head injuries a day earlier when he failed to negotiate a turn at Hemond's Moto-X Park in Minot.

Sgt. Joe Mills said the accident is being reviewed by the U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Park owner Serae Hemond said it was the first fatal accident at the 1.5-mile dirt bike course since it opened in 2002.

BOOTHBAY HARBOR — A charter boat carrying 136 passengers ran aground yesterday and the Coast Guard is still not sure how that happened.

The 65-foot Argo was reported aground near Spruce Point at 12:07 p.m. yesterday. The Coast Guard dispatched two boats to assist, but the Argo was able to re-float on its own and was escorted to Cabbage Island, its destination.

There were no reports of injuries or pollution, but the incident is under investigation. Coast Guard officials are especially curious whether any of the the navigational buoys in the area contributed to the mishap.

A Coast Guard aids-to-navigation unit is scheduled to verify the position of the buoys in the area to determine if that could have caused problems.

Conditions in the area were calm seas with winds around 10 miles per hour and 200 yards of visibility.
