Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation's service. In Maine:

• Gov. John E. Baldacci has directed that the United States flag and the State of Maine flag be flown at half-staff from sunrise until noon, "in remembrance, honor and deep respect for all of our servicemen and women who have given their lives for our freedom."

At noon, flags are to be raised to full-staff in honor of our nation’s battle heroes.

• A number of parades are scheduled along the roads of Maine towns, where veterans will march to the memorials of their towns and lay down wreaths in remembrance.
