Welcome to the Sunrise Herald with Giselle Goodman, the place to go to get the news from overnight and this morning...

IN THE WEATHER

sunnywindy.gif

At 9 a.m., it was 54 degrees and overcast in downtown Portland.

Another breezy day ahead with the wind blowing around 17 to 22 mph. However, it is a warmer wind than yesterday and a full sun might take our temperatures beyond the 70 mark. Gusty at the coast, less so inland.

The Sunrise Herald WEATHER WATCHERS report.

sunnywindy.gif From Bill in Rockland: Pretty clear at 5:30 a.m. 47 degrees and fairly breezy. Pleasant enough, but not exactly basking weather.
sunnywindy.gif From Shawn in Yarmouth: It is 45 degrees here. It felt a bit cool last night, but maybe it was just me. We have a thin layer of high clouds making the sky a milky blue with a light breeze. A good day for lacrosse!
sunnywindy.gif From James in Cape Elizabeth: 47 here and it is rather breezy at 6 a.m. Nice blue skies. Just another day in paradise.

ON THE ROAD:

• On the Maine Turnpike, mind the 50 mph work zone speeds between miles 60 and 61 in Gray and between mile 67 and 68 in New Gloucester.

In Gray, a southbound lane closure is scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. for bridge work. And in New Gloucester, north and southbound lane closures are scheduled between 6:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. at the Mayall Road Bridge for bridge work.

• Can you get over it? The high gas price in Maine, as shown in the chart above, is more than $4 a gallon. Never thought I'd see the day. Wish I could run my car on soda water. It is A LOT cheaper by the gallon. If you click the chart above it will show you where you can spend that $4 a gallon, or where you might get a bargain.

ON THE OCEAN:

Our small-craft advisory from yesterday continues today until at least noon. Winds gusting up to 30 knots from the northeast. Seas swell up to 6 feet. All of it subsides as the day marches on.

High tide today in Portland is 6:36 a.m. and then again at 7:20 p.m. Tide will be lowest just around lunchtime (12:58 p.m.).

THE NEWEST NEWS

NEW CASTLE, N.H. — The Maine Marine Patrol says it will continue to search for the body of a missing Maine lobsterman although the U.S. Coast Guard called of its search Monday night for 46-year-old Christopher Tobey.

Tobey, his 16-year-old son and another crew member were tossed into the waters when their boat capsized Sunday night off the coast of New Hampshire. The teen and crewman made it to Duck Island on the Isles of Shoals and were rescued yesterday.

But Tobey's body was not recovered. The Coast Guard suspended its search last night, and said there was no way he could have survived the freezing temperatures of the Atlantic.

Maine Marine Patrol Sgt. Rick LaFlamme said search crews from his department will probably be back in the water near where the boat capsized by Thursday, with divers and a plane.

"Today will be mostly for preparation," he said. "We will be setting up a dive operation when conditions improve."

Today's small-craft advisory, he said, makes it too difficult for divers to go into the water.

LaFlamme said this is a recovery mission, rather than a rescue. He said it is unlikely Tobey would have survived in the water this long.

The three boaters started swimming together after their vessel, Sav-A-Buck, capsized. The teen was helping his father swim, but at some point, the senior Tobey went under. He was not wearing a life vest.

"It all happened very fast," LaFlamme said.

The Coast Guard, meanwhile, plans to investigate why the boat capsized.

BANGOR — A man from Rangeley pleaded guilty yesterday in U.S. District Court to possession of child pornography. Zachary Allen Winship, 33, now faces up to 10 years in jail and fines of up to $250,000.

According to court records, Winship in March 2006 was returning home from a trip to Jamaica when customs authorities discovered child erotica images on his laptop computer. They were in a Philadelphia airport at the time.

Although the images recovered at the airport did not warrant prosecution at the time, Winship told his wife, who was traveling with him, that similar images would be found at their home computer in Maine. Upon arriving home, Winship's wife immediately dismantled the computer before her husband could use it, and turned it over to her attorney, who then gave it to the police. The computer did indeed contain child pornography, including pictures and videos.

He was arrested shortly afterward.

PORTLAND — A reminder to residents that today's the day to vote on the Portland Public School System's budget in a citywide referendum.

Voters in SAD 6 (Buxton, Hollis, Limington, Standish, Frye Island) and South Portland also vote today on their school budgets.

Voters will be asked: "Do you favor approving the Portland City School Budget for the upcoming school year that was adopted at the latest City Council budget meeting, held on May 5, 2008, and that includes locally raised funds that exceed the required local contributions as described in the Essential Programs and Services Funding Act?"
Detailed information about the school budget may be found on the Portland Public Schools Website.

The city is encouraging all residents to vote. All local polling places will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. For more detailed information about where or how to vote, contact the city clerk's office at 874-8677.

I'm taking the Downeaster to Boston today; does that count for "commute day"? :) Didn't think so.
