IN THE WEATHER

9 a.m., it was 38 degrees with a bright blue sky in downtown Portland.
Clear skies give way to some cloud cover by later in the day. A cold north wind blows strong, keeping temperatures brisk in the mid 40s to low 50s.

ROCKLAND: Crystal clear and calm in Rockland this morning, but only 31 degrees. I do get robins, but they don't appear till afternoon. Canny birds.

Chilly northwest wind blows 10 to 15 knots. Seas 2 to 3 feet. Wind settles in the evening to 5 to 10 knots.
High tide today in Portland at 6:56 a.m. and at 7:47 p.m. Tide goes out at 1:25 p.m.
ON THE ROAD:
• Sweeping the Maine turnpike today between mile 2 in Kittery and mile 7 in York AND between mile 32 in Biddeford and mile 38 in Saco. Sweeping will be on both sides from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. It should not be cause for delay.

THE NEWEST NEWS
RESCUE CREWS WERE IN CORNISH on the Spur Road at 8:30 a.m., attending to a construction worker who fell from a roof and may have broken a leg, said a state police dispatcher.
The call came in just before 8:30 a.m. and Sacopee Rescue in Parsonsfield was dispatched. The name of the victim was not available for this 9 a.m. report.

MISS PORTLAND MAKES HER MOVE TODAY, going from her place of storage at Pearl and Somerset Streets (directly across from Whole Foods), to her new home at 138 Marginal Way.
The popular 1949 Worcester Diner takes her trip at 9:15 a.m. She was recently purchased by Tom Manning of Mahwah, N. J., from the City of Portland. It is scheduled to open in the fall as a diner, once again.
A FIRE IN VASSALBORO LAST NIGHT left a family homeless.
Rob Dumais, his wife Marlene, and two teenage sons lived at the home, which is located on Webber Pond Road. The two-story home sustained heavy fire and smoke damage.
The cause is still unknown. There were no injuries reported.
THE MAN CHARGED WITH SETTING FIRES around Portland's peninsula on Friday will be in court today to face charges that hold him responsible for a wave of a destructive car fires that had firefighters and police swarming over the city's peninsula before dawn Friday.

seen in the background, that was set on fire early Friday morning in Portland.Thomas Cassidy, 19, spent the weekend in the Cumberland County Jail on 250,000 bail after his Friday arrest.
Firefighters early Friday morning scrambled to put out fires even as new ones were igniting on nearby streets, leading police to stop and question anyone who was anywhere near the fires.
Thomas Cassidy was walking at Pleasant and South streets, not far from one of the last fires to spring up, when Sgt. John Nueslein stopped him.
Witness statements and items Cassidy was carrying tied him to the fire in a car at 68 Pleasant St. that was reported just a few minutes earlier, Police Chief Tim Burton said. Cassidy also was charged with burglary to a car and carrying two concealed weapons.
In all, 10 car fires called were called in over two hours, nine cars were vandalized and the car fires ignited three buildings.
