The Far North, Part II
Position 70 22.3N 54 50.6W
This is our furthest north! We are at Hareo I. just NW of Disko I. Our passage north of Disko was unbelievable. 1000's of bergs and steep bold mountains on either side. Like sailing through the Alps, Tetons, and Grand Canyon.
We gave two blasts of hello to a local fishing boat, they chased us down and sent over a net bag of 50 or so snow crabs! Arrived @ Hareo I. @ 2200
and had a celebration of FURTHEST NORTH. Tucker,Dylan, and Eric S. were
recognized for their initiative. A cairn was built at the top of a ridge with note
and picture taken with Governor Baldacci's flag. Celebration included sparkling cider and homemade blueberry jelly donuts!
Today a north most swim is planned before getting underway sometime this afternoon. This will be the beginning of our return home!
Everything around us reminds us that we are WAY north, but nothing more than the sun which does not set. It is not too bad underway, but in port it throws your time perception out the window.
All communications out of Greenland have been difficult compared to what we are used to in Canada and US. Few phone calls have been successful, and internet is more frustrating than useful.
We will be bound for Sisimuit later today.
