Freeport, Falmouth bound for Vermont for drama competition

Two Maine high schools will represent Maine at the New England One-Act Drama Festival, set for April 17-19 in Rutland, Vt.

Maine schools invited to attend are Freeport and Falmouth high schools. Falmouth won the Class A title at the Maine Drama Festival, and Freeport finished second in Class B.

Freeport will perform the original play "Conversations In a Box."

Going to the regional drama festival is the highest honor a school can receive. The Freeport recognition is especially noteworthy: It will be the first time in the festival's 80-year history that a student-written play will be performed, said Tim Ryan, Freeport's drama director.

The schedule is tentative, but the Maine schools likely will perform on April 18.

Ryan said the drama club must raise between $3,000 and $4,000 to attend the event.

"As you can imagine, the students - and director - are pretty pumped and honored to be invited to perform at this prestigious event," he said in an e-mail to theater friends.

I went to the state festival at Cape Elizabeth and saw most of the shows performed there. My girlfriend's daughter was in the Yarmouth show. I happened to see the Freeport show which was the very last show at the festival. I must say it was one of the greatest plays that I have ever seen.

My girlfriend's daughter even said afterward that is was one of the best one act shows that she ever saw. What makes this more incredible is the fact that it was written by a kid and the production had very little for a set. It should have been the kiss of death but what it did was made you the viewer focus on the acting which wasn't hard to do because the acting was incredible.

Everyone who were at the awards ceremony could not believe that the show didn't win the state title. I even think the winner Rockland thought they weren't the best show there.

Whatever the reason why Rockland isn't going is not the story what the story is that Freeport is going and making history. I really think the kid that wrote the play will be famous someday!

I never thought I would say this as a die hard Yarmouth High School fan but GO FREEPORT!!!!!!!!
