Darling earns Hockey East honors

Maine freshman goalie Scott Darling was named Hockey East's Pro Ambitions Rookie of the Week, the third Maine player to earn the conference's weekly honors.

Darling, who has started Maine's past three games, helped the Black Bears sweep Providence this weekend. Darling made 35 saves Friday in a 3-2 win over Friars, and made 24 saves Saturday in a 3-0 win.

Minnesota is the new No. 1 in college hockey, as the Golden Gophers are atop the USCHO.com/CBS College sports top 20 poll and the USA Today/USA Hockey top 15 poll.

After a 5-1 loss Friday at UMass, Boston University dropped a spot to No. 2 in both polls. Of note - No. 13 UNH has lost three in a row, including a 8-3 loss Friday at UMass-Lowell and an 8-6 loss Sunday at Boston College.

Maine got 33 votes in this week's USCHO.com/CBS College Sports poll and 13 votes in the USA Today poll.

Rachel takes over coverage of the University of Maine hockey team and was introduced to Maine hockey as a seventh-grader in Annapolis, Maryland, after reading a 1988 Sports Illustrated story about Shawn Walsh's impact on the program. Nearly 20 years later, she still has the four-page article in her possession.

She and her husband, Tommy (who also works for MaineToday Media, Inc.) are avid sports fans who root for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Kansas Jayhawks. After a year of marriage, their next step in life is to find a bigger house!
