Holiday sweater? Think again.
Time to admit the truth: I’m a discriminating holiday snob.
Yes, I love those big colorful bulbs that take me back to childhood.
And Christmas wouldn't be the same without our treasured vintage silver pom-pom tree, little more than a decorated broomstick.
But holiday sweaters? Count me out. Unless, of course, you embrace the kitsch for a sweater-themed evening. (My savvy thrift-sale friend says - no surprise - that you'll find them year-round on the racks at Goodwill.)
Grandma may have actually stumbled upon a smart solution for festive dressing when she donned her sweater of candy canes and snow men. Easy - and affordable - party outfits are a must as our stress levels rise during the countdown to Christmas.
I took her cue and wandered downtown to find advice on keeping style simple for a holiday event: How could I dress up basic black for around $100 or less?
Spoil Me Rotten suggested a sweet, sparkly Nick and Zoe tank top ($64) that could be a wardrobe staple for future parties.

Simply Chic recommended Penny Loves Kenny ballet flats ($49.95) in either gold or silver. Their little carrying pouch could double as an evening bag. Other options: flip-flops decorated with Swarovski crystals ($125) if you're not stomping through snow piles, and black Hanky Panky thongs with sparkles ($25) for ... well, you know.

Tavecchia offered velvet-feel gloves ($18) with a matching scarf ($24) to dress up a black coat.
At Wyler's I found a holiday jacket of boiled wool ($92) in the most luscious ruby red, and fun beaded drop earrings that definitely won't break the bank ($6).

Chantal's earring case held green and gold earrings ($100) worth a second look...

Next stop: Encore on Congress Street, where owner Rita Farley has trays of ever-popular vintage Christmas pins, most for under $20. Trees, she says, are always a top seller.
Grandma would love it - and so will I.
