Peep toes

Sorry ladies, I just can’t stop peeking at your toes.

It’s pedicure season, and my feet seem to be frozen in front of the nail polish rack. Indecision has set in and I‘m looking down for inspiration.

Should I go classic with red or match my clothes with something more neutral – say a French pedicure? Or should I stick with the deep Mac purple I wore all winter? (It is, after all, the only bottle of nail polish I’ve ever actually drained. In my entire life.) Hot pink looks great, but I’m not sure I’m a hot pink kind of gal.

Popular colors this summer by OPI are Red Hot Ayers Rock, Brisbane Bronze, Teal the Cows Come Home, Kangarooby and Tasmanian Devil Made Me Do It.

What to do? I popped down to Paradiso Salon and Spa on Market Street for some advice. Paradiso’s owner Kandace Wagner and nail tech Amanda Degifico say I’m not the only color-challenged client; lots of ladies just can’t decide (their guess is a little less than half).

  • Lesson No. 1: Don’t be afraid to let them choose the color – they’re used to it. They’ll look to your makeup and lipstick for inspiration – are you big into neutrals, or do you lean toward pinks and reds? If you’re more tan, they’ll likely recommend a deeper color. Going on vacation? They might suggest something much brighter than you’d normally pick for your job at the office.

  • Lesson No. 2: They know what’s big this season. This summer that means bright reds, pinks and corals. Browns (especially OPI’s “Brisbane Bronze”) are a good choice, and teens are tempted by blues.

  • Lesson No. 3: If you do pick a color, make sure it’s one you’ll love to look at all day. And it doesn’t have to be a color that matches all your clothes.

  • Lesson No. 4: Don’t do the matchy-matchy with your fingernails. Natural fingernails or sheer white are your best bets. (“I do, I do” by OPI is one of their favorites, especially for brides.)

  • Lesson No. 5: Still can’t decide? Kandace offers up the all-time favorites: OPI’s “Kennebunk-port” (a deep port wine color) and “Cajun Shrimp” (a deep coral), or a classic, clean-looking French pedicure.

Let me know if you've found a favorite color. My purple's gotta go...

I too have succumb to the dark purple nail color over the winter time (my weakness was "black tie optional" by OPI).
However, I've recently been to Cherry Pie, a great little downtown salon & spa (check it out), and fell in love with some new OPI colors.
I'm a red girl myself, so I liked "Red Hot Ayers Rock".
My mother & sister love pinks though, so they've enjoyed "You're a Pisa Work" and "Italian Love Affair".

I took your advice and went into Paradiso and asked them to choose a color for my toes. They picked "Red Hot Ayers Rock". I LOVE the color choice (and had the best pedicure ever!) I am so glad I read your blog, I have pretty toes and a great new spa because of it! Thanks Andrea and thanks Paradiso!
