Hot heads

So do you suppose Hillary Clinton still wears headbands when she hangs around the house?

Remember Hillary of the headband years? So preppy - but it was hard to have a bad hair day.

On summery days like this, they do make some sense. (Either that or go short, but that's for another hot blog day...)

Thankfully head straps are back - slim and simple or wrapped in silk. A lunchtime stroll to the Old Port turned up hair ornaments that will turn heads and keep you cool.

Some favorites:

  • Metallic pleated fabric and leather headbands, just in at Helene M., and France Luxe plastic headbands in super prints with a no-headache guarantee.

  • Wide fabric headbands at Tavecchia that are just the ticket to jazz up that black and white outfit.

  • Silk headbands with fabulous geometric designs and amazing colors at Bliss.

  • Wide fabric headbands with an attached scarf on the back in everything from Pucci-like prints to polka dots at Spoil Me Rotten.

And don't forget scarves, so chic on runways and L.A. ladies. Add your big shades and you'll stand out in the crowd. If you're ready to try the style without a huge investment, check out local consignment shops. I found some fabulous scarves at Second Time Around, the new shop on Fore Street.

A couple of bobby pins will help keep head scarves in place. Another trick: wear a stretchy headband underneath and pin the scarf to that.

What's she wearing?

Chantal Young makes summer casual look so easy... She paired Rock and Republic crop jeans with a Trina Turk white shirt and knotted a Splendid pale yellow sweater. Her bag is by Trina Turk and her Michael Kors shoes have a cork sole. She's wearing Armani shades from Optical Expressions.

Andrea Nemitz is online day editor at pressherald.com.

She graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a degree in journalism and has been at the papers since 1986 as a photo editor, features editor and business editor. She and her husband, columnist Bill Nemitz, live in Bar Mills and can say with relief that all five kids have made it through college.

Her passion for fashion first emerged in fourth grade, when she begged her parents (successfully) for white go-go boots. (Think Nancy Sinatra.) She knew at an early age that those brown Girl Scout oxfords did not work with a blue tulle Easter dress, and has the scowling photo to prove it.
