Hot dogs! Comic books! Free!

Free comic books and hot dogs will be given out this Saturday in Eliot at an event called "Capt'n Eli Family Fun Day."

The event will be the launch party for the new graphic novel series "The Undersea Adventures of Capt'n Eli" by Portland artist Jay Piscopo. Capt'n Eli is also the logo for Maine-made Capt'n Eli sodas. And the sodas will be free too.

The event will be from noon to 3 p.m. at the Regatta Banquet and Conference Center on Route 236. Besides a free "Capt'n Eli" comic book, hot dogs and soda, there will be live music, a hands-on ocean display, a race car and more.

People can also meet the artist and get a free sketch.

For more info on the character, see the Capt'n Eli Web site

Ray Routhier is a dad who is morally opposed to paying for fun. He's 44, and a New Hampshire native (meaning he's morally opposed to a lot of things) and has been writing for daily newspapers for 20 years. He lives in South Portland with his wife Jessica and two daughters, Sophie, 4, and Dinah, 1. The family also includes two cats, twelve Barbies and 47 Polly Pockets. As a family, they love going to Portland Sea Dogs games, walking down to Willard Beach, dancing to the "Powdermilk Biscuit" song on public radio's "A Prairie Home Companion," and finding new stuff to do.
