How sweet it is

Sometimes it's a tough sell trying to get your kids to do something that's also interesting to you.

But I promise if you say "Hey, let's go to the candy factory," you won't get a fight.

And you can indeed visit the inside of a candy factory, for free, this coming Columbus Day at Haven's Candies in Westbrook.

Haven's holds its factory open house every year on Columbus Day, which is Oct. 13 this year. People are even invited to make their own candy. The open house is from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The rest of the year, factory tours are available by appointment. The cost is $2.50 a person, with a minimum of $25 per party.

But I say, a view of the candy factory will be all the sweeter when it's free.

As a family, they love going to Portland Sea Dogs games, walking down to Willard Beach, dancing to the "Powdermilk Biscuit" song on public radio's "A Prairie Home Companion," and finding new stuff to do.
