Fresh air flicks

Drive-in movies may be dying out, but walk-in movies are all the rage in Portland this summer.

Starting with "Finding Nemo" tonight, there’ll be a different, free movie playing in Congress Square on Monday nights through Aug. 4.

The movies are sponsored by MEMIC, a worker’s compensation insurer, and are part of the Portland’s Downtown District event series.

Not all of the movies will be appropriate for young kids, but most would great for children in middle school and beyond. “Finding Nemo" is certainly fun for all ages.

The rest of the schedule includes: “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” on July 14; Jack Black’s hilarious turn in “School of Rock” on July 21; The Beatles musical farce “A Hard Day’s Night” on July 28; and “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” on Aug. 4.

The films start at dusk, usually around 8:15 p.m. Because of the limited space, people start showing up around 6:30 p.m. with pillows and blankets. Some people sit on the steps in the square; some use the 30 or so chairs there.

But since the crowd usually numbers more than 300 people, a lot of folks are just camped on the ground. The films are shown on a screen near the Eastland Park Hotel, at the corner of High and Congress streets.

As a family, they love going to Portland Sea Dogs games, walking down to Willard Beach, dancing to the "Powdermilk Biscuit" song on public radio's "A Prairie Home Companion," and finding new stuff to do.
