Sounds plunderfull

This week’s award for “Most Creative Family Event of Epic Proportions” goes to the Pirate Rendezvous in Damariscotta. It’s scheduled for Saturday, beginning around 10 a.m.

A 55-foot sailing ship full of pirates will sail into town with cannons blasting. At noon, the ship comes into the schooner landing off Main Street, and a battle between rival pirates, with muskets and swords, ensues. Then the merry band moves down Main Street to plunder what they can, including a bank’s drive-thru. The show is free.

I’m not making this up. The local Lincoln County News has been writing about the event all year.

The day-long event features three re-enacting groups, including the Mystic Pirates of the Damariscotta. The kid-friendly free events during the day include a children’s pirate costume contest at 1 p.m., a treasure hunt at 2 p.m., and a pirate pet costume parade at 3 p.m.

For a taste of what the town of Damariscotta’s in for, check out the ship and crew.
