Love your library

So I’m standing at the counter of the South Portland Public Library, waiting to check out “Olivia Saves the Circus” and a couple of Wiggles DVDs, when I notice a small printed notice announcing that the library has a free family pass for Willowbrook , a 19th century village/museum in Newfield.

As a card holder, all I have to do is tell the staff when I want to use the pass, and if it’s not already reserved, I can bring my family of four for free.

Saves me $18 at least. Since then, I’ve scanned some library Web sites and found other libraries offer passes to places such as the Maine Wildlife Park or USM’s Southworth Planetarium. And more.

So next time you’re standing in line at your library, buckling under the weight of a dozen “Dora the Explorer” DVDs, keep your eyes open.

And if you want to read a whole story about free family events in Maine in June, click the "Go" icon above.

Hi Ray,
In your "Love Your Library" story, you didn't mention more at SP Public Library. You can sign your kids up for the Summer Reading Program and get free tickets to a Sea Dogs game, plus other prizes including a free t-shirt for reading books (yes, you can sign up your young kids and read to them if they can't read yet). They have lots of great free programs at the library this summer. You can use the library's pass to the Portland Museum of Art. I'm not sure if they still offer it, they used to have a pass to the Children's Museum, too.
By the way, you can also sign yourself up for the Adult Summer Reading Program. SPPL was one of the first libraries to introduce that program. You get an entry into a prize drawing for every book you read (although, ethically, you might not want to use that "Olivia Saves the Circus" book as one of your entries...)
Love your blog. I'm a mom but I dare say I enjoy it as much as a dad would :-)
Thanks!!
Kathy

Ray Routhier is a dad who is morally opposed to paying for fun. He's 44, and a New Hampshire native (meaning he's morally opposed to a lot of things) and has been writing for daily newspapers for 20 years. He lives in South Portland with his wife Jessica and two daughters, Sophie, 4, and Dinah, 1. The family also includes two cats, twelve Barbies and 47 Polly Pockets. As a family, they love going to Portland Sea Dogs games, walking down to Willard Beach, dancing to the "Powdermilk Biscuit" song on public radio's "A Prairie Home Companion," and finding new stuff to do.
