How sweet it is

Sometimes it's a tough sell trying to get your kids to do something that's also interesting to you.

But I promise if you say "Hey, let's go to the candy factory," you won't get a fight.

And you can indeed visit the inside of a candy factory, for free, this coming Columbus Day at Haven's Candies in Westbrook.

Cut-rate classical

I have no problem exposing my kids to the finer aspects of music and culture.

Ray Routhier is a dad who is morally opposed to paying for fun. He's 44, and a New Hampshire native (meaning he's morally opposed to a lot of things) and has been writing for daily newspapers for 20 years. He lives in South Portland with his wife Jessica and two daughters, Sophie, 4, and Dinah, 1. The family also includes two cats, twelve Barbies and 47 Polly Pockets. As a family, they love going to Portland Sea Dogs games, walking down to Willard Beach, dancing to the "Powdermilk Biscuit" song on public radio's "A Prairie Home Companion," and finding new stuff to do.
