To the Third Inning
Posted by Andi Darling
I think we've struck a chord here. I have read Stephen King's "Carrie" and even saw the movie from the front row some years ago. I, like many of the readers here, am not a horror fan either. I used to hide under the couch when the Wicked Witch of the West showed up on the "Wizard of Oz" when I was a kid. As an adult, my dad used to call me to see if I was behind the couch whenever he knew the "Wizard of Oz" was being shown on T.V. I am a chicken. : }
That confessed, I am just really pulled into "The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon". I love the Red Sox and I enjoy easy hikes. I love the titles of the chapters in this book and right now I just finished "Third Inning" and I'm on the "Top of the Fourth". I have to say, having done a bit of hiking, this story is really scary.
This story is so plausible. Who hasn't stepped off the path on a walk and gotten completely turned around? And who didn't, when reading that Trisha lost it and ran, who didn't just about yell, " Stay put! Stay put!" That moment felt like watching an old black and white horror movie when the hero enters a room and we all know the villain is just behind the door waiting to strike.
So, how does everyone else feel up through the "Third Inning"? Most of us know the kind of writing Mr. King is known for. Do you expect something supernatural to occur soon?
And admit it, who just had to stay up and read the whole book in just one sitting?
Who's going camping and/or hiking this summer in the Western Maine woods?
What's waiting for you there? Don't forget your Walkman!

Well I've gotten to the top of the 4th without a heart attack. I'm having a hard time reading this from Trish's perspective--the grandmother in me keeps chanting 'stop moving...let them find you!' and I worry everytime she turns on the walkman that her batteries will run out. I'm still not able to read it after dark, but I am enjoying it, and actually hoping to finish it this weekend, so I will be able to say "I did it!" --sorta like diving into the deep end to get it over with. King is every bit the writer everyone claims, and I can see how people would want to read other things he wrote.
