The Maine caucuses
Hello. I’m back from vacation and ready for an exciting week of politics.
First, thanks to everyone for their comments on Kevin Wack’s three-part series, “Danger behind the wheel: Suspended drivers in Maine.” The response so far has been overwhelming. Kevin’s working on some follow-up stories that you should see in the paper in the next week or so.
Now it’s time to talk about the Maine caucuses. Maine’s Republicans will hold their caucuses Wednesday through Sunday, although most will happen on Saturday. Democrats will caucus on Sunday, Feb. 10.
We’ll have stories starting Thursday and we expect a story on Maine’s GOP winner for Sunday’s paper, as well as similar coverage for the Dems the following weekend. We also ran a comprehensive story on both parties' caucuses in last Sunday's newspaper.
As I write this, the battles for both the Republican and Democratic nominations remain a toss up between John McCain and Mitt Romney on the GOP side, and Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama for the Dems. But so far it’s been hard to get a read on the significance of Maine’s caucuses.
On one hand, we hear from political experts who tell us that they won’t have much impact on the national battles for the nomination because most of the delegates and attention are in the larger states, or in the 24 states holding primaries or caucuses next Tuesday, the so-called “Super Tuesday.”
Meanwhile, other experts think Maine could become a factor, particularly if both nominations are still wide open, which could then translate into greater national media attention and candidate visits.
So far it’s anybody’s guess. GOP contender Ron Paul visited the state yesterday, but as of right now, none of the other candidates are scheduled to come here. We’ll keep you posted if that changes.

Nebraska and Maine are the only 2 states that use the "Maine Method in distributing its electoral votes. 2nd congressional district NE and 1st congressional district ME are an electoral vote by themselves! Every 3rd party in the country should campaign in these 2 places. It's there best chance to get the election into the Congress. Starting a domino effect, whole states will follow! Expect to see Ron Paul on a third party coming to 1st district Maine later this fall. People are ready for an alternative. Other political parties will draft Paul. His people have a movement. Let's just see if his movement is smart enough to focus on one of these two special areas of the country where people have more power than they understand. If a candidate doesn't receive a majority of the electoral votes in the electoral college after the November election, then it is a "hung election". Once in the legislative process,Maine and Nebraska and Vermont and all the little population states will have the same voting power as California, New York, Florida etc. (1/50th)

Let us look at McCain’s conservative credentials:
-IMMIGRATION: he wrote the bill granting amnesty to illegal immigrants (co-sponsored by Ted Kennedy)
-SOCIAL SECURITY: he voted to give your social security money to illegal immigrants
-TAXES: he voted against the Bush tax cuts multiple times (he has since flip-flopped and has campaigned as a lifelong tax-cutter)
-RHETORIC: he routinely engages in Democratic class warfare against big companies in America, particularly the “evil” drug companies who research cures to debilitating diseases for a profit
-ECONOMY: as recently as December 2007 he admitted “he does not know the economy very well” and needed to get better at it
-1ST AMENDMENT: he wrote the McCain-Feingold campaign finance bill that was declared to be an unconstitutional infringement of the 1st Amendment (co-sponsored by ultra-liberal Democrat Russ Feingold)
-2ND AMENDMENT: he was called the “worst 2nd amendment candidate” by the president of the NRA
-ENERGY TAX: wrote a bill (co-sponsored by his buddy Lieberman) imposing a massive tax on energy which, according to the Department of Energy, would drastically raise the price of gasoline and put 300,000 Americans out of work
-GLOBAL WARMING: supports radical global warming legislation which involved him voting with every Democrat; think only America is responsible to take action, not other superpowers
-JUDGES: he joined forces with Democrats (Gang of 14) to block the Senate Republican’s attempt to confirm conservative, strict constructionist judges; also said Alito was too conservative for his liking
-WAR ON TERROR: fought with Hillary Clinton to demand that terrorists be given a full American trial
-GAY MARRIAGE: he joined liberals to fight against a federal marriage amendment supporting the institution of traditional marriage
-CHRISTIANS: campaigning in 2000, he famously described Christian leaders as “agents of intolerance”
-PRO-LIFE: he filed an amicus brief against pro-life advocates in Wisconsin
-BI-PARTISANSHIP: he met with leading Democrats in 2004 to discuss the possibility of being John Kerry’s Vice-President; publicly considered leaving the Republican Party in 2001 after he lost the primary
-PROFESSIONAL ETHICS: ringleader of the infamous Keating 5 ethical scandal which cost US tax payers $160 billion (Google it)
-PERSONAL ETHICS: McCain cheated on his first wife after she had a severe accident that left her partially disabled. He then divorced her and married his multi-millionaire mistress, whose daddy bought McCain a spot in the Congress

I agree on the article about the problem of suspended drivers driving on Maine roads. There should be a monitoring system of some kind to let the authorities know if someone that is suspended is driving. I also think it would be a greater issue about drunk drivers doing the same thing.
A few days ago, my brother-in -law was killed in a head-on collision the took his life. This is an ongoing issue that has to be dealt with. THEY DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT TO BE ON MAINE OR ANY OTHER ROADS IF THEY HAVE BEEN CONVICTED THE FIRST TIME!!!!!!!!!! Now, my sister has all the greif that one can handle to get over her loss, there is no excuse for the individual that took his life. There is no amount of condolances, "Im sorry for your loss", comments, or anything related to this type of comment that will bring him back.
I think there should be some kind of monitoring system that should tell a police officer that a prior convicted drunk or drugged driver has just passed him. This would hopefully have some effect on deterring any further incidents of this nature.
Now, there is a funeral to attend, lots of undo greif, and for what? To let this driver get away with a short sentence? No way!! There are two counts of vehicular manslaughter at best here, and that is the least that he/she should get. I think that two counts of murder should be in order!!!
I pleade to the readers that read this be aware what's at thier view!! Don't let any more of this continue!! There is no excuse.
The individual that did this went to the hospital and was diagnosed with a broken ankle,a few bumps and bruises, and already has a lawyer, gee i wonder why? This is not going to replace a seriously broken heart!!!!!!!!!!
Think about this, folks.

Just a quick note on the elections, I can not remember an election that a write-in candidate has won, it' s about time for THE PEOPLE of this country to make the decision, not big money! I for one, am getting tired of the big money backed candidates getting elected and doing what thier big money backers tell them to do. This allows nothing for the lower class and working people of this country to benifit on anything. We still get knocked down while some big shot gets all the credit, and they forget who gets them to where they are today.
I think it's in this countries best interest to take one candidate, who is running or not, and vote him in. The benifit goes to the workers of this counry, not to the big money that takes all the credit.
I am a Huckabee supporter!!!
