The Great Ice Storm of 1998

We’re getting some great reader anecdotes in response to our call for stories about the Great Ice Storm of 1998.

Denise Kearns from North Waterboro sent us a touching story about how her family lost power and became friendly with a couple from Pennsylvania who had come to Maine to help as part of the Red Cross response to the storm – a friendship that remains strong today.

I also had an e-mail today from a woman in Washington state who was living in a cottage on the Presumpscot River at the height of the storm.

Please keep ‘em coming. You can e-mail anecdotes to me at arussell@pressherald.com. The stories on the storm’s 10th anniversary will run Sunday, Jan. 6.

In 1998 during the Maine ice storm, I had just gotten a really great office. It was on the tenth floor with a view across the river, which was pretty great. But what made it really sweet was that the outside wall was a floor-to-ceiling window. I barely had to move to look out on this incredible view. I used to love to go to work just because my office was so gorgeous. My mom in Maine lost power only briefly during the ice storm but was other snug and warm.

We lived near Annabessacook Lake in Winthrop when the storm started the night of Wednesday, 1-8-98 and lost power at 3:24 AM 1-9-98.There was no K-J paper Fri. 1-9-98. Our area looked like a war zone with 50% of our trees down. We cooked on our grill until 1-22-98 when power was restored by a crew from Mass. at 5:15. Moved to WI July 1998.

I was home alone with my 11 year old son and 10 year old daughter. We lost power for 4 days, kept warm and cooked on the wood stove. For some reason I had lots of bacon, veal and deer in the freezer, pancakes and eggs for breakfast, we ate well. But what I remember the most was all of us ice skating on our driveway!

During the Ice Storm I was a sophomore in High School and although I rejoiced in the snow days I was less than thrilled to be in school well into the month of June. I am not sure what came first, the Ice Storm or the infamous "October Washout" but horrific memoirs of both solidified my move out of the Snowy Miserable Vacationland in 2004.
