Big week for crime news
We're following two intriguing crime stories.
The first is the story of Kevin Foley, the Portland man whose body was found near his car in a Westbrook cemetery last month. The cops say he was shot to death and that the crime wasn’t random.
As an editor, this story raises lots of questions. Police say they’ve looked into Foley’s background and didn’t find a "dark side" or anything like that. So why was Foley in the cemetery late at night? What was happening in his life in the days, weeks and months leading up to his death? Our public safety reporter, David Hench, will try this week to answer some of those questions and hopefully shed some light on a case that remains a big mystery.
Less mysterious, but equally compelling, is the story of Michael Woodbury, the Windham native who, according to police and his own public statements to reporters last week, walked into a Conway, N.H. military surplus store last Monday and gunned down three people.
Unlike Foley, there’s no apparent mystery here. We even have a possible motive: Woodbury says it was a robbery attempt. But we still have lots of questions. What was Woodbury’s life like in prison? Did he ever spend time in the former Maine Youth Center? Who did he come in contact with after he got out of prison in May? What kind of mental health treatment do inmates get? We’d also like to interview the two sisters who traveled down south with him, or their mother.
Our investigative reporter, Kevin Wack, is looking for some of those answers.
