Bush-Putin
From a news perspective, this is an exciting week.
For the first time since President George H.W. Bush was in the Oval Office, Kennebunkport will become the scene of an international summit between superpowers. Bush’s son, President George W. Bush, will go head-to-head with Russian President Vladimir Putin at Walker’s Point Sunday and Monday.
As local media, we rarely get access to Bush when he’s here. Instead we get pool reports filed by a member of the White House press corps. But there are plenty of other stories to be had. The most obvious is what is the town doing to prepare for Putin’s visit. The media itself is likely to be a story, depending on how many reporters and journalists from the U.S. and Russia descend on Kennebunkport. Then there’s the protesters, who plan to converge on the town Sunday.
Of course, those are the most obvious stories that everybody will be writing. One thing we try to do is provide some of those stories that aren’t so obvious, such as personal stories from people who may interact with Bush or Putin. If you know of anyone who fits this bill, have them send me an e-mail. Or they can contact our acting regional editor, Matt Wickenheiser, at mwickenheiser@pressherald.com.
