Heading back again

It looks like another perfect day to head to the Portland Flower Show.

Looking at my personal schedule, it is going to be really busy.

Gary Fish of the Maine Board of Pesticide Control is giving a talk on organic lawns at 10:30 a.m.

John Bunker of Fedco Seeds is speaking about fruit trees at noon. I have talked to Bunker on the phone but don't recall meeting him in person, so this should be fun.

From 1 to 3 p.m., I will be at the Press herald booth, hoping to talk to you. So unless I can sneak out quickly, I won't be posting again until after then.

Bob and Barbara Maurais of Mainely Ticks will be lecturing at 1:30 p.m. If you haven't done much reading on ticks, this will be fascinating -- and scary. Lyme disease is rampant in this part of the country.

As a certified wine lover -- some would say wino -- I am looking forward to Stephen Melchiskey of Maine Coast Vineyards and his lecture on growing grapes in Maine at 3 p.m.

The day's lectures close at 4:30 p.m. with Buzz Pinkham talking about growing large pumpkins.

As I was walking out of the show yesterday, I stopped by Maplecrest Lilies to chat with Mark Christoforo, the owner. I did a column on Maplecrest in January, talking to Mark by telephone while he was in Florida. It is always great to put a face to the voice. I couldn't resist and purchased 15 lily bulbs and some blossom stems to take home. A coworker at the office said it was nice that I was taking flowers home to Nancy, but I will enjoy them as much as she will.

Despite the fact that I write this blog, I am old enough to do most of my newspaper reading the old-fashioned way, with paper. But Staff Photographer Greg Rec took some great video of workers preparing the flower show on Wednesday. You could see it by clicking on the lead picture of Thursday morning's story about the flower show online, but I was too technically inept to figure that out. But if you click here, you can see what Greg -- with me as narrator -- did.

I'm headed off to the show. So drop by and have a good time. I'll try to run out on Gary a bit early and post another blog before noon.

The show is at the Portland Company complex at 58 Fore St. in Portland. Admission is $15 a day, and you can get your hand stamped to go in and out as often as you want.

Tom Atwell has written the Maine Gardener column in the Maine Sunday Telegram since the spring of 2004. He has worked at the Press Herald/Sunday Telegram since 1974, about the same time he started gardening with any seriousness.

He gardens with his wife, Nancy. She not only is the better gardener of the pair, but also knows the botanical names of plants. They have two grown children and three grandchildren.

Tom was born in Skowhegan, grew up in Farmington and graduated from the University of Maine with a BA in journalism. His goal each year is to have continuous compost from his three compost bins, continuous bloom in his low-maintenance garden and more fruits and vegetables on his family table than the garden pests eat in the field.
