Back for the flower show

I'm back in Maine after a week in Florida and ready for the Portland flower show.

We toured only one formal garden while we were in Florida -- a small, new and well-done demonstration garden at the Hillsboro County (Tampa) extension office. I love seeing plants that I consider house plants growing outside.

And the palms at City of Palms Park in Fort Myers, where the Red Sox play, were quite nice.

But this week, we can all get our garden fix at the Portland Flower Show.

I am planning to attend the preview party from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, and will report on the gardens and the winners in Thursday's Press Herald.

On Wednesday and Thursday, I will be at the show during the day, talking to people and attending lectures, and will blog about what I see. So if you can't make it to the show and still want to see what is going on, check in right here.

In addition, we figured that I would spend some time at the Press Herald booth at the flower show in case anyone wants to put a live face to the blogger and Sunday columnist. I also will answer questions if any of you have them. I will be at the booth 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. Thursday and 1 to 3 p.m. Friday. The Press Herald will be located in Booth 10, which is quite near the main entrance to the show.

So anyway, I am planning to have a lot of fun. And I'd like you to come and join me.

Tom Atwell has written the Maine Gardener column in the Maine Sunday Telegram since the spring of 2004. He has worked at the Press Herald/Sunday Telegram since 1974, about the same time he started gardening with any seriousness.

He gardens with his wife, Nancy. She not only is the better gardener of the pair, but also knows the botanical names of plants. They have two grown children and three grandchildren.

Tom was born in Skowhegan, grew up in Farmington and graduated from the University of Maine with a BA in journalism. His goal each year is to have continuous compost from his three compost bins, continuous bloom in his low-maintenance garden and more fruits and vegetables on his family table than the garden pests eat in the field.
