Ordering seed

Nancy and I ordered our seeds, vegetable seedlings and a few ornamental plants on Sunday.

All of the orders were done online.

It was a great way to spend a housebound snowy day, dreaming about the time when the snow will be gone and we can be gardening again.

We ordered two kinds of leeks, King Richard and Lancelot, and two mixes of short-season onions -- keepers and sweet -- that we had not had before.

We ordered from the Maine companies Johnny's, Pinetree and Fedco; Dixondale Farms in Texas for the onions and one kind of leeks and Avant Gardens in Dartmouth, Mass., for some annuals and perennials.

I still have to buy some seeds at Allen, Sterling & Lothrop in Falmouth, but I drive by there regularly and will pick up the seeds I need there sometime before pea-planting season.

It is time to think about making purchases, and in Sunday's column I go over some ways to save money during the coming gardening season.

I didn't blog last week -- too much going on other than gardening, and not much happening in a garden-related area. But if you haven't read it yet, on Jan. 11 I reported on the operation of Maplecrest Lilies in Parsonsfield.

Tom Atwell has written the Maine Gardener column in the Maine Sunday Telegram since the spring of 2004. He has worked at the Press Herald/Sunday Telegram since 1974, about the same time he started gardening with any seriousness.

He gardens with his wife, Nancy. She not only is the better gardener of the pair, but also knows the botanical names of plants. They have two grown children and three grandchildren.

Tom was born in Skowhegan, grew up in Farmington and graduated from the University of Maine with a BA in journalism. His goal each year is to have continuous compost from his three compost bins, continuous bloom in his low-maintenance garden and more fruits and vegetables on his family table than the garden pests eat in the field.
