Christmas pruning

Nancy and I spent an hour or so Sunday pruning some of our shrubs.

The results will provide quite a few Christmas designs throughout our house # and maybe some houses of other people.

The photo shows some red-twig dogwood branches in the foreground with cut holly in the background and some other greens to the sides.

We wouldn't usually cut so much except that Nancy has the Cape Elizabeth Garden Club coming to the house this week for a greens workshop. But it was a good day to be outside, and the shrubs needed some work.

If you want some tips on cutting and using backyard and roadside greens, check out my column this coming Sunday in the Maine Sunday Telegram's Home & Garden section.

Last Sunday's column was on amaryllis and other Christmas plants for this season.

Tom Atwell has written the Maine Gardener column in the Maine Sunday Telegram since the spring of 2004. He has worked at the Press Herald/Sunday Telegram since 1974, about the same time he started gardening with any seriousness.

He gardens with his wife, Nancy. She not only is the better gardener of the pair, but also knows the botanical names of plants. They have two grown children and three grandchildren.

Tom was born in Skowhegan, grew up in Farmington and graduated from the University of Maine with a BA in journalism. His goal each year is to have continuous compost from his three compost bins, continuous bloom in his low-maintenance garden and more fruits and vegetables on his family table than the garden pests eat in the field.
