Martha update

A lot of people have asked me how my visit with Martha Stewart went.

And a lot of people have asked how I looked, since I wrote about my clothing preparations. Here is a picture of me interviewing her, thanks to staff photographer Shawn Patrick Ouellette.

You can't see the new khakis we bought, but the thing about khakis is that they all look the same.

Martha was great, the party at Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens was excellent and I even successfully filed with a laptop for the first time.

Our home vegetable garden is recovering from the constant rain and fog even though it isn't completely dry as yet. I cleaned out most of the moldy raspberries and am getting some more fruit, which is always good.

We also are getting summer squash, cucumbers, potatoes and what is likely to be the last of the second planting of peas.

Our daughter, Tandy, bought native corn for a birthday celebration dinner over the weekend. First corn is always nice.

The tomatoes are still green with no sign of red. I really want a bunch of tomatoes. We could eat green peppers, and will if we need them, but are waiting for them to turn red. And onions are still healthy, green and growing, but some are tennis-ball size, so we could use them.

And we have a watermelon about the size of a softball.

It is all going pretty well.

And I just knocked on wood.

Tom Atwell has written the Maine Gardener column in the Maine Sunday Telegram since the spring of 2004. He has worked at the Press Herald/Sunday Telegram since 1974, about the same time he started gardening with any seriousness.

He gardens with his wife, Nancy. She not only is the better gardener of the pair, but also knows the botanical names of plants. They have two grown children and three grandchildren.

Tom was born in Skowhegan, grew up in Farmington and graduated from the University of Maine with a BA in journalism. His goal each year is to have continuous compost from his three compost bins, continuous bloom in his low-maintenance garden and more fruits and vegetables on his family table than the garden pests eat in the field.
