Gone Fishin'

The garden is slowing down, so I am about to head toward West Forks, Rockwood and such places in search of the elusive landlocked salmon.

I had intended to wrap up this season's blog before I left, but we haven't had a frost yet and my mind is more on fish than on plants, so I will wait.

When I get back around Oct. 8, I will post a few times rating the season past, give you a list of to-do items for the fall and winter, give you a list of some of my favorite catalogs and books for winter reading and maybe something else.

Right now I want a keeper salmon on Friday, Saturday or Sunday so I can have one good streamside meal with the tomatoes I will be taking to the woods. Beginning Monday it is catch-and-release on the rivers I will be fishing and that will be fun.

So for now, keep harvesting.

Tom Atwell has written the Maine Gardener column in the Maine Sunday Telegram since the spring of 2004. He has worked at the Press Herald/Sunday Telegram since 1974, about the same time he started gardening with any seriousness.

He gardens with his wife, Nancy. She not only is the better gardener of the pair, but also knows the botanical names of plants. They have two grown children and three grandchildren.

Tom was born in Skowhegan, grew up in Farmington and graduated from the University of Maine with a BA in journalism. His goal each year is to have continuous compost from his three compost bins, continuous bloom in his low-maintenance garden and more fruits and vegetables on his family table than the garden pests eat in the field.
