Harvest time

A walk through the vegetable garden tells me I am going be busy harvesting this weekend.

The tops of the onions and the tops of the potatoes have died back, so that means it is time to bring them in. The longer you wait, the better the chance of the produce rotting in the ground.

The onions are easy, you just walk along and pick them up. And they are pretty big this year, so it won't be hard to find them.

Harvesting potatoes, however, requires a lot of digging. I try to do it while either the Red Sox or Sea Dogs are playing, so I can listen to the radio while in the garden.

The tomatoes are doing well and we are getting a few cucumbers. The sweet potatoes look healthy, but I have never grown those before, so I don't know if they are being successful or not. But I will leave them alone until the first frost.

Tom Atwell has written the Maine Gardener column in the Maine Sunday Telegram since the spring of 2004. He has worked at the Press Herald/Sunday Telegram since 1974, about the same time he started gardening with any seriousness.

He gardens with his wife, Nancy. She not only is the better gardener of the pair, but also knows the botanical names of plants. They have two grown children and three grandchildren.

Tom was born in Skowhegan, grew up in Farmington and graduated from the University of Maine with a BA in journalism. His goal each year is to have continuous compost from his three compost bins, continuous bloom in his low-maintenance garden and more fruits and vegetables on his family table than the garden pests eat in the field.
