Craving tomatoes

It's getting toward mid-August and I need my tomatoes. My garden has produced three cherry-sized tomatoes so far this year.

We have eaten other tomatoes. We bought some at the local farm stand. And some of the seedlings Nancy started produced tomatoes that son Zac and his wife, Marah, brought up from Medford, Mass.

But the tomatoes in our garden are remaining green. I don't know if it is foggy Cape Elizabeth weather, a generally cool summer or something else.

Another oddity of the garden. We did not start cucumber seedlings this spring, opting to directly seed them in the garden. Well, using year-old seed, nothing sprouted.

Until last week. I saw two tiny cucumber plants. I have no idea what took them so long to sprout, but I doubt we get any cucumbers.

Off to the farm stand.

We've started picking a few cherry tomatoes, some early girls and a couple of beefstake so far. I'm new at growing tomatoes but am amazed to see well over 30 cherry tomatoes on one of the vines, and it is still producing flowers left and right. Maybe they like the left over coffee I use to water them.

We are finally getting a few cherry tomatoes, but nothing full size yet. Just a little wam weather will do it.

Tom Atwell has written the Maine Gardener column in the Maine Sunday Telegram since the spring of 2004. He has worked at the Press Herald/Sunday Telegram since 1974, about the same time he started gardening with any seriousness.

He gardens with his wife, Nancy. She not only is the better gardener of the pair, but also knows the botanical names of plants. They have two grown children and three grandchildren.

Tom was born in Skowhegan, grew up in Farmington and graduated from the University of Maine with a BA in journalism. His goal each year is to have continuous compost from his three compost bins, continuous bloom in his low-maintenance garden and more fruits and vegetables on his family table than the garden pests eat in the field.
