Running late

I today officially declare that the garden crops are running late. They are healthy and strong, but just a little slow.

I took an extended tour of the gardens this morning because I am going to be writing my mid-season update for the paper this afternoon. That update will appear July 22.

The peas are bountiful, but the only potatoes with blossoms – a sign that you have new potatoes for boiling – are the ones where I accidentally left potatoes in the ground last fall.

I have blossoms on the tomatoes, but no tiny green tomatoes yet. The beans are slow in coming around.

But for every complaint there is a positive. With the cool and, for the most part, damp weather, the flowers have remained in bloom longer. The perennial beds have been gorgeous, as are Nancy's containers.

So we will just keep eating peas and enjoying the beauty.

Tom Atwell has written the Maine Gardener column in the Maine Sunday Telegram since the spring of 2004. He has worked at the Press Herald/Sunday Telegram since 1974, about the same time he started gardening with any seriousness.

He gardens with his wife, Nancy. She not only is the better gardener of the pair, but also knows the botanical names of plants. They have two grown children and three grandchildren.

Tom was born in Skowhegan, grew up in Farmington and graduated from the University of Maine with a BA in journalism. His goal each year is to have continuous compost from his three compost bins, continuous bloom in his low-maintenance garden and more fruits and vegetables on his family table than the garden pests eat in the field.
