Soggy times

I was away for the weekend and it has been too soggy to get to the garden since I have been back, so I have not had much to report. But I did get out this morning.

Our roses – all own-root styles and hardy – are beginning to bloom, and look good.

We have had our first water lily bloom in the garden pond. We also had our first morning glory bloom, and they should last for the rest of the year.

The peas are great. The Knight and World's Record produced about 10 days ago and are still producing, and we are beginning to get Green Arrow and good pods from the Sugar Snap.

A lot of hard rain and wind but no serious damage in the vegetable garden.

I hate to complain because we needed the rain, but I will take some sunshine and dry for a couple of days.

I saw your commentary on the Lily beetle last week-end. I use Bayer systemic rose food and insecticde on my roses for the Japanese beetles, and in desperation put some at the base of my emerging lilies at the beginning of the season-they are beetle free!!! Looking fantastic. The few that I missed have truly been devoured, so I think the stuff really works.

Tom Atwell has written the Maine Gardener column in the Maine Sunday Telegram since the spring of 2004. He has worked at the Press Herald/Sunday Telegram since 1974, about the same time he started gardening with any seriousness.

He gardens with his wife, Nancy. She not only is the better gardener of the pair, but also knows the botanical names of plants. They have two grown children and three grandchildren.

Tom was born in Skowhegan, grew up in Farmington and graduated from the University of Maine with a BA in journalism. His goal each year is to have continuous compost from his three compost bins, continuous bloom in his low-maintenance garden and more fruits and vegetables on his family table than the garden pests eat in the field.
