Weekend update

Busy weekend.

Fought the woodchucks and they are in hiding or have gone to their cottage at the lake for the Fourth of July weekend. But not before they ate all our lettuce and our neighbor's beans.

Picked half of a 5-gallon pail of Knight and World's Record peas over the weekend. Had family visiting both days, so ate them raw as an appetizer with drinks before dinner. Have promised my mother-in-law I will not pick until the morning of July 4 so we can have cooked peas with salmon and strawberry shortcake for dessert.

Our strawberries are done. We have some leftover Sparkle and a new bed of an early variety – the bed is in its second year. We got about 10 quarts total. We will have to buy at a farmer's market for shortcake July 4. Next year we will plant a bed of late variety strawberries to extend the season.

Took the row covers off our warm weather plants. The tomatoes and peppers look great. None of the cucumber seed sprouted, so we will have none of that. That'll teach us to use 2-year-old seed. More business to the local markets, I guess.

We have some squash, but not much.

Have a great Fourth.

Tom Atwell has written the Maine Gardener column in the Maine Sunday Telegram since the spring of 2004. He has worked at the Press Herald/Sunday Telegram since 1974, about the same time he started gardening with any seriousness.

He gardens with his wife, Nancy. She not only is the better gardener of the pair, but also knows the botanical names of plants. They have two grown children and three grandchildren.

Tom was born in Skowhegan, grew up in Farmington and graduated from the University of Maine with a BA in journalism. His goal each year is to have continuous compost from his three compost bins, continuous bloom in his low-maintenance garden and more fruits and vegetables on his family table than the garden pests eat in the field.
