Stupid woodchuck

The woodchucks – there are more than one, I think – are back. I heard the telltale whistle woodchucks make when they sense danger when Nancy and I decided Sunday morning that the rains were not going to come, and the vegetables needed water. They must have heard me dragging the hose.

I had last seen woodchuck signs Memorial Day weekend, when I stuffed four separate holes with kitty litter, ammonia, rocks and soil.

I thought I had won, but they were just resting.

Since it had been a month I had some used kitty litter, and I dropped that down in the hole – one I had filled a month ago. I added more rocks and soil, and went away, tending to my watering and other duties.

A couple of hours later I came back, heard the whistle again and heard something running around under our shed. I saw some holes under the shed, and filled them again, spreading some burrowing rodent repellent around the holes.

This morning before I came to work, there were two more holes and I filled them again.

The plants are just getting good. I can't lose them now. I almost hated to leave the garden to come to work.

I've had numerous problems with woodchucks over the years. The Hav-A-Hart trap never worked until recently due to a change of bait. I was telling a friend about my dilemma and how I've tried everything I thought a woodchuck would eat. Heck, they eat everything in the garden, so I figured I'd use veggies for bait, but that worked for catching everything but woodchucks (skunks and racoons mostly). My friend said he knows somebody who's a lobsterman and he uses lobster shells in his trap and it works every time. I wasn't about to go out and buy lobster, but I did have some frozen shrimp left over from last season and tried that....and it worked! Two weeks ago I caught the mother woodchuck and this morning I caught the baby. Funny thing was that once I left the shrimp and stopped baiting it for a few days, the old shrimp started to smell and that is what drew the young woodchuck. Give it a try Tom. Good luck!

Tom, have any luck trapping your woodchuck? Is he still wreaking havock in your gardens?

I've caught all of our woodchucks and now have to start trapping more racoons before they steal all of our apples and grapes. Last year all of my apples were missing, I looked up in a tree and there was a nice little stash of my still green apples perched there in the crook of a branch. After that they started eating my grapes that I use for wine. I began trapping them and got 9 last year and only 1 so far this year.

Tom Atwell has written the Maine Gardener column in the Maine Sunday Telegram since the spring of 2004. He has worked at the Press Herald/Sunday Telegram since 1974, about the same time he started gardening with any seriousness.

He gardens with his wife, Nancy. She not only is the better gardener of the pair, but also knows the botanical names of plants. They have two grown children and three grandchildren.

Tom was born in Skowhegan, grew up in Farmington and graduated from the University of Maine with a BA in journalism. His goal each year is to have continuous compost from his three compost bins, continuous bloom in his low-maintenance garden and more fruits and vegetables on his family table than the garden pests eat in the field.
