Woodchuck in hiding

From Friday morning through Saturday evening, my woodchuck created three new holes and I covered four. He may have found the ground beneath my shed inhospitable, or he may just be worn out.

I saw the first new woodchuck hole in a week around noon on Friday, filled it with bricks and used kitty litter. Found a new hole Saturday morning, filled it with rocks and slightly used kitty litter. Did some traveling and shopping – including for a bottle of ammonia. Saturday afternoon I found another new woodchuck hole by my shed, poured ammonia down it, and covered it with rocks and soil. I also followed a trail to an older hole, about 10 feet onto my neighbor's property, poured ammonia down that, tossed in a big rock, and that is it.
The ammonia trick came from Tim after my first woodchuck posting. I remembered the ammonia but forgot, until I started writing this, that he recommended using a rag and not pouring the ammonia right down the hole. If my way fails, I'll try his.

Tom Atwell has written the Maine Gardener column in the Maine Sunday Telegram since the spring of 2004. He has worked at the Press Herald/Sunday Telegram since 1974, about the same time he started gardening with any seriousness.

He gardens with his wife, Nancy. She not only is the better gardener of the pair, but also knows the botanical names of plants. They have two grown children and three grandchildren.

Tom was born in Skowhegan, grew up in Farmington and graduated from the University of Maine with a BA in journalism. His goal each year is to have continuous compost from his three compost bins, continuous bloom in his low-maintenance garden and more fruits and vegetables on his family table than the garden pests eat in the field.
