Onions coming up

My onions are making good progress. At least most of them. They seem to like the damp weather – within limits.

This year I am growing the same red, white and yellow I grew last year: yellow and white sweet spanish, and red burgermeister. In addition, a reader from Saco sent me seed of Red Wing and Ailsa Craig. We did not plant the seed as early as we should have in the cellar – late March instead of early March. But I put them out a couple of weeks ago, just before an inch of hard rain. The Red Wing got battered but Ailsa Craig seems to be doing OK.
The commercial onions were much larger to begin with, but we will see if the donated seed catches up.
My Sunday readers may remember that I was given orders two years ago to grow larger onions or give up. My onions were larger, but not huge. This year I am giving them more room and more fertilizer, and intend to give them more water.

Tom Atwell has written the Maine Gardener column in the Maine Sunday Telegram since the spring of 2004. He has worked at the Press Herald/Sunday Telegram since 1974, about the same time he started gardening with any seriousness.

He gardens with his wife, Nancy. She not only is the better gardener of the pair, but also knows the botanical names of plants. They have two grown children and three grandchildren.

Tom was born in Skowhegan, grew up in Farmington and graduated from the University of Maine with a BA in journalism. His goal each year is to have continuous compost from his three compost bins, continuous bloom in his low-maintenance garden and more fruits and vegetables on his family table than the garden pests eat in the field.
