Soggy weekend

We cut our first lilacs this weekend, which always brings a nice aroma to the house. I love lilac time. But with the soggy weather, that and picking asparagus was about all the gardening we did.

The weather Saturday and Sunday – a cold drizzle or mist – would have been OK if we hadn't had more than an inch of rain on Friday, leaving the soil and grass soggy all weekend.
If you like lilacs, the place to go Memorial Day weekend is McLaughlin Garden in South Paris, where they have their annual lilac festival. Check out www.mclaughlingarden.org for details.
And if you are in South Paris on Saturday afternoon, you can check out the Maine Iris Society's iris show at Oxford Hills Middle School. Their site is at www.irisgarden.org/mismain.html.
The fothergilla in our garden has been looking good for the last five days. Fothergilla is called the bottlebrush bush and has white flowers that look like a bottlebrush. It is native to the United States but not Maine, growing in lowlands in the Southeast.
A red azalea has joined the white one in bloom, as well.

Tom Atwell has written the Maine Gardener column in the Maine Sunday Telegram since the spring of 2004. He has worked at the Press Herald/Sunday Telegram since 1974, about the same time he started gardening with any seriousness.

He gardens with his wife, Nancy. She not only is the better gardener of the pair, but also knows the botanical names of plants. They have two grown children and three grandchildren.

Tom was born in Skowhegan, grew up in Farmington and graduated from the University of Maine with a BA in journalism. His goal each year is to have continuous compost from his three compost bins, continuous bloom in his low-maintenance garden and more fruits and vegetables on his family table than the garden pests eat in the field.
