Super Bowl, movies and politics

MIKE HOFFMAN:

On the bus at the moment, just lost out in cards, definitely a bit rusty after not traveling for two months. By the end of the trip I’ll get my touch back, no problem. Dixie pulled two upset victories in a row. I guess this isn’t the week I should keep pressing my luck after the disappointing Patriots loss on Sunday. First off I will say up until the fourth quarter that may have been the most boring game I’ve ever watched. I’ve concluded that Belicheck didn’t want to win that game due to all the controversy and questioning that would have happened if they did win.

It’s funny when you get outside New England you don’t realize how many people wanted the Pats to lose that game. It’s not like the Red Sox. I figured because everyone across the country loves the sox then why not the Pats too … not so much.

The Weinrich family was so kind to have the team up to their little shack to watch the game. I must say that Eric and the Mrs. put together one of the best Super Bowl party set-ups of all time, the seating, TV, sound and food was first class. All I can say is anyone that gets invited to the Weinrich household for a Super Bowl or any party for that matter, don’t pass it up.

So I must admit I just registered to vote a couple weeks ago. I’ve never been around to vote for one (I’ll be honest I know you can send in an absentee ballet but that was just pure laziness on my part), and two, talking politics may be the most painful conversations there can be. I figure if someone wants to talk politics, I could just say I don’t vote so then what do they say from there, end of convo. But I finally got the guilt from my mom to register. I went un-enrolled party, because then I'll still have the option to not talk politics saying I haven’t read to much into it yet and haven't picked a side. Although leaning Republican.

So we are on the fourth movie of the day, Oceans 13 was first, Rounders, Office Space, and now the Patriot. As the season moves on you always resort to the oldie but goodies. The beginning of the season your always watching the movies you missed last spring then after Christmas is a new crop of the summer flicks, now all the newbies are gone. But I must say I sometimes enjoy the oldies a bit better because you can get in and out of them as you play cards. My top movies of all time are Shawshank Redemption, Caddyshack, and rounding out my top five would be Gladiator, Kingpin and Top Gun.

So the other night Sauce told me that our outtakes from the commercial made it to YouTube. It had to check it out, but was left sour again knowing my acting days aren’t in the future. Speaking of, I never talk to much about TV, but I am a huge Lost fan. Comes in a close second behind Family Guy and in 3rd is Seinfeld. This season of Lost I’m hoping answers a lot of questions, the first episode was unreal. Looking forward to Thursday nights episode, dying to find out what the lady in the helicopter was doing on the island.

I’ll admit sometimes I write nicknames in this and some of you probably don’t get them. Most guys on our team we just put a Y, IE, S or ER on the end of their last name. Fergy, Dixie, bouker, Platter, Seags. Some of them you may not catch if you hear the guys talking may be, Sauce or Sals (salcido), Father time (wienrich), B Ry (bobby ryan), and Jeep is JP, Bru is Bruno. Just incase I ever throw you off with one of them. Well it’s been a long day off to eat dinner and hopefully not to much chocolate.

I love the nicknames you guys use they are funny.and YES the football game was a TOTAL letdown, even though I was rooting for both teams (because I don't really like football... I'm more of a hockey, soccer chik [I play both!]!) but my heart was totally with the patriots...... it is kinda ironic but my school's mascot is the patriot too!!!

GERALD COLEMAN (at left), 22, is in his first full season with the Pirates. He was drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2003. He played in a couple of NHL games for Tampa but saw most of his action with the Lightning's AHL team in Springfield, Mass. He was traded last season to the Anaheim Ducks, parent team of the Pirates. Coleman grew up in Evanston, Ill., and played on the U.S. national team as a teenager. As a member of the London Knights in the Ontario Hockey League, he was on squad that won the Memorial Cup.

MIKE HOFFMAN, 27, took a different path than most hockey players on the Pirates. He graduated from Scituate (Mass.) High 1999, then went to prep school and the United States Hockey League before playing for the University of Connecticut. In the fall of his junior year, Hoffman got a call from his agent asking if he'd like a tryout with the Worcester Ice Cats. Before the first game the coach asked, "Do you fight?" and Hoffman said, "I do now." He had a fight that night against Graham Belak, and according to Hoffman, "that's how my pro career started."
