In the holiday spirit

GERALD COLEMAN:

With Christmas time rolling around, usually around this time teams have Christmas parties or team get together. The Pirates staff did a great job putting together a Christmas party at the Inn on Peaks Island. It was the first time Lindsay and I have been to the Inn on the island.

The more I see of Portland the nicer it gets. Everyone was dressed up and having a great time. When we got there they had really good hors d'oeuvres, fruits and drinks waiting for us. It was a nice atmoshpere with the fires going and all the guys sitting around comfortably. Its nice that everyone has the chance to get together at least once a season to just talk and enjoy each other’s company without being around hockey for the night.

After dinner we got an early present, the rookie tradition of singing Christmas carols. All the rookies, assistant coaches, and some of the front office stood up and sung some carols, putting a smile one the some faces. Everyone had a good laugh. One that stood out was Bobby Ryan with his extra commentary. As the night wore on it colder obviously and we got some freezing rain, which didn’t help with the walk back to the ferry for the ride home. It was funny watching some people and the girls in heels walk on the ice back to the ferry.

My two dogs are loving the snow. Being outside, running around and digging their faces in the snow. They’re like children – when you want them to come in its impossible. They are hilarious when they do come inside after being out since there black and they have a blanket of white on them. Great photo opportunity for Lindsay.

For me Christmas has come some what early. i treated myself to a new PS3. With all the gift cards I had it let me get in at a reasonable price, which was really exciting. I was a little nervous to get it at first. I wasn’t sure which was better – an Xbox 360 or the PS3. I bought the new game NHL 08, which had all this year’s rosters. I get to play myself as well as everyone else on the Portland Pirate roster. Its always fun to play because I always give guys a hard time in practice that they can’t score on me; I go home and score 3 goals with Them in NHL 08 and go to the rink the next day and tell them “ hey since you couldn’t score on me in practice, to make you feel better I scored three goals with you in NHL 08 and you won us the game.” Most of this is directed at Simon Ferguson. We have a competition every day to see if he can score goals on 10% of his shots. Usually he only scores 1 goal on 10-15 shots.

Besides getting myself gifts I have gotten some gifts for my family here and there. Hopefully I can find some time in the next week to get the rest of it done and get them sent out to my family. As most people know I procrastinate, and hopefully I can get my gifts out before Christmas.

Starting to feel a lot more like Christmas. As I came home last weekend, Lindsay had a decorations and a beautiful tree up with some presents already underneath. Its a good thing she did it while I was gone, because with me around it probably wouldn’t have gotten done. Besides, the tree and all the lights we have family coming in this weekend. It’s nice to have your family out to see you, because usually its hard for them to visit more the once a season.

Cheers,
Colsy

I'm a huge pirates fan, but I think you should spend more time practicing then playing NHL 08. I drove all the way to Manchester NH and watched you give up 4 goals in the first 30 minutes. I had people throwing food at me because you guys looked horrible. Then I go to the Manchester game in Orono, and there is the same crap, but 6 goals this time. You need to get your head in the game Coleman and if you cant win the game........GOALIE FIGHT!!!

I am sorry, but you have no idea how hard it is to play the game of hockey...Espically being a goalie: give the guy a break...

Colsy,
Yea maybe you haven't had the greatest of games but don't let a person who only know what it's like to play from their Lazy Boy bother you... You can only do as good as the rest of the team does.. I'm sure you don't need to hear it from me that you should take what the comentators say with a grain of salt.. Anyway Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!!!!

P.S. The only thing I do agree with Mike on is we need to see a goalie fight!!

Coleman,

I agree with Mike and K. I just wonder what the Ducks were doing trading Shane O'Brien for you. I'm surprised that you don't have a sunburn on the back of your neck from all of the red lights going off behind you! I would rather see Mike Wall back in net and he was more like an open window then a wall. The statements made above you wont even bother you. As an athlete all you do is pick up your paychecks. There is no more pride to be a Pirate. All you guys do is skate around with your heads down. The only player who ever stuck up for his teammates this year was Hoffman. Now unfortunately he is hurt and no one has stepped up. I was at the Monarchs game where you were down 4-0 and Gordie Dywer skated away from a fight. There is no heart on the team anymore!! Step it up Coleman and Pirates!!

I think he stepped it up tonight! Good work Colsy. I think Anaheim knows what they are doing,Winning the Stanley Cup kinda proves that.I've been to alot of Pirates games and there have been only a handful of times that I've seen them dogging it. I think when everyone gets healthy that they will beable to gel together as a team.

Goongirl,

You should spend less time in the chat rooms trying to pick up hockey players. If you are trying to pick up hockey players, maybe you should aim a little higher than the pirates! If you have been to a few pirates games you would have noticed that they play with no heart, but apparently the only thing that you noticed was how they look in their uniform.

Tell me with an honest, straight face that Coleman is worth Shane O'Brien? At least you pick the one pirate that is a good player to have a crush on.

i thought o'brien was nothing more than a pretty boy who couldnt really play hockey myself (alot of dumb mistakes) and even id rather see him than coleman with the team... altho i cant really agree that wed be better off with "wet paper bag" mike wall i hated him mor'e....ps ive been to "a few games myself lol almost every venue in pur division with the exception of hartford i believe and only missed a handful of home games in the past 3 years, so i dare anyone to tell me i dont kno what im talking about (not that anyone really has tho have they?)

December 28, 2007 11:07 PM

K, you don't know what you are talking about...:) I do have more respect for people's opinion who have played the game before(as I have and at a pretty high level and I am still involved in the game at the college level)...Im mean would you really pick Mckenna over Coleman: please...I do however, think you are right on about O'Brian( don't think he is a pretty boy) but was very very overrated...So what if you have seen the games if you don't know what is going on...I think Craig is the guys in the stans that yells fight fight fight over and over again and wouldn't know a hockey puck if it bounced off his head and landed in his lap...

It’s easy for fans of any sport to sit in the stands and criticize their team or a certain player when they aren't playing well. You piss and moan in the stands, you even come home and comment on a player’s blog how bad they suck. You seem to forget that it is a goalie and five other players on the ice. Maybe in your mind its Coleman against the entire AHL. When your defense can't keep the puck at the other end of the ice for an extended period of time your bound to have some pucks get by you. So when you mix bad defense and a man down from power plays your gonna have a really bad night like the one in Orono. I’m talking to you Mike, you may have been there but you apparently missed the four power play goals Manchester had. If you did see them I'm sure it was Coleman's fault we had the power plays in the first place. Coleman and McKenna have the same amount of wins, but Coleman has 2 shutouts. If you've actually been watching the games, instead of scanning the ice looking for a potential fight, you would see that Coleman has come up with some amazing saves. There is a reason he is in the net, if he was as bad as your making him out to be he wouldn't be there. And Mike Wall? Come on, Wall has two wins this season. So why don't you shut up, enjoy the game, and feel lucky knowing that Portland has a professional hockey team. If you can't do that then get the hell out of the arena.

um hi sorry but i kinda do kno whats going on, and what i mean by o'brien being a pretty boy was that all the puck bunnies loved him here, and im not saying coleman doesnt win or make the occasional good play, or that its all his fault we loose, i just personnaly think he makes alot of avoidable mistakes, just the same as o'brien did. and it COMPLEATLY does not in the least bit way matter if youve ever even picked up a hockey sitck in your life (wich thanks i have)or what level you play, you can still understand whats going on, y would i go to every game and sit therte clueless? im NOT STUPID, or ignorant to this game, thanks.

Justin,

You can try to brag up Coleman all you want, but nothing will change the mind of true hockey fans from Portland. Coleman struggles on every shot that comes to him. Yes your right, we do go shorthanded a lot, but his job is to stop the puck. It's hard for the offense to score 7 goals when their own goalie is giving up between 4-6 a game. It is a team sport, but Coleman shouldn't be bragging about how great he is at NHL 08 when he blows in real life. No one cares about nintendo hockey, I drive over 2 hours to see games, and he has no right to even be a starting goalie. He's a bum. Coleman should be given a one way ticket straight to Augusta, Georgia!

mike has exactly my point, thank you mike

nothing will change the mind of true hockey fans from Portland

those of us who are at almost every game and cheer for our team win or loose are the true fans
the true fans are also the first ones to admit when our team or someone on our team sucks because weve watched them for so long and we know what they can do . we know our teams potential and whn someone isnt living up to that we can see it

You know how you can REALLY tell a "fan" of hockey from someone who has ever played the game (and therefore has some sort of a true knowledge base)? They ALWAYS BLAME THE GOALIE. And, in this forum it seems all the more inappropriate. Scouting report on Coleman? He really reads the play well and comes up with some great clutch saves. The bad part? Slow lateral motion and slow to get up. Combine that with the "I can do it all by myself" mentality of the defensemen who slide to block shots and create a screen down low and you get some real problems. But remember, this is, after all, a DEVELOPMENTAL league, and with some time here, and some attention paid to those details, he could emerge to be a fine goaltender. He is the only reason Portland lost in overtime and not regulation last night. The Pirates were dead by the third period and he really stood on his head to hold off the onslaught from Providence. Everything else I could say here has been said above, so I need not be repetetive. But seriously...show a little respect. Most of these guys are kids, adjusting and growing as hockey players. We are lucky to see them at this level, and sounding off on a player's blog entry about Christmas is the most inappropriate, disrespectful, unsupportive amount of crap I have ever seen. You want these players to really play for Portland? Why don't you all try getting behind your team just a little bit, and give them a reason. This is the primary reason why I hate hockey fans.....seriously. Can any of you so-called fans and super-critics even skate?

im REALLY SICK of all u people who think you know more about hockey than everyone else just cause uve played hockey before THAT MAKES NO DIFFERENCE when ur watching a game it doesnt matter if uve played before or not ur WATCHING SOMEONE ELSE. and btw i have played hockey before too and YES i can skate, pretty well actually.

December 30, 2007 12:39 PM

I see your point that there is five other players on the ice. When they are shorthanded it makes it more difficult to cover all shooters. What about last night in the shootout when Coleman gave up all four goals ONE on ONE! I have watched him play, I have watched the team play. That night in Orono the only like the Pirates showed was when they came within two for a short period of time. You can brag all you want about playing hockey. Ill be honest the only hockey I have ever played was in the backyard. That doesn't mean that I don't know what it takes to be an athlete. I know what heart is and what I can see from the Pirates this year is that they are lacking it! There have been a handful of games when they have been down and have come back, but you need to play hard every play of every game.

December 30, 2007 04:18 PM

The kicker is, it's not like they are in last place or have a crappy record: They are 18-12-4!!! The would have beaten Providence last night if they didn't have to kill 7 minutes of penaltie in the 1st 10 minutes of the 3rd...I just don't understand all the complaining cause some 22 year old kid said he played NHL 08 in his blog...

No, you don't have to PLAY a game to understand it but to understand how hard the game is to play, you have to have PLYAED the game before, sorry thanks...

If that was too deep for you I am sorry ,thanks...

i never said i hadnt played before, so how do you know that i dont understand how hard it is? MY OWN PERSONAL OPINION is that coleman isnt playing up to "pirates potential" yeah so we are in third place right now, but ive seen this team do so much better than they have shown lately...thats all im saying.

December 30, 2007 11:28 PM

None of us are saying that this is an easy game. I don't understand why you think you know so much about hockey just because you played. Apparently you are only a true fan if you have played the game before. According to Tim anyone who has not played hockey cannot have an opinion on the game. We all just need to sit there with are mouths shut. Then we need to tell the players that we appreciate there effort in the games, even if we think they didn't play at a suitable level. Go ahead Colsy and Pirates let in another 8 goals on New Years Eve. Tim will still think your worth something.

Coleman is a proven winner (won the memorial cup) He's still very young and when he's Mckenna's age he'll be a back-up in the NHL and where will Mckenna be? Mckenna is a very good AHL goaltender he just doesn't have the upside that coleman does, Coleman has played 2 NHL games,(at the age of 19 or 20). And scouts think very highly of him. I'm not the only one who thinks highly of him, just ask a scout! Goalies for the most part don't peak until their mid 20's.

January 14, 2008 12:29 AM

i heard coleman got a concussion at practice or somthing like that..injured in some way...hes still on our roster, just not suited up, it must be bad enought that he cant even suit up as a back up, they called up jp, he looked really good in lowell the other night too by the way, i was there.

Goalies for the most part don't peak until their mid 20's.

mckenna is just hitting his mid 20's now so that means his best is yet to come, and he's GOOD now.

I think very highly of Coleman. And I always will. I will admit that he has his bad games, we've all seen them. But he has absolutly amazing games as well. He works hard to become better at what he does. He refuses to give up and doesn't let people tell him that he can't do something. Because of that, I have more respect for him than many of the other players. A lot of guys are in Portland because they have to be, not because they want to be. He's here because he wants to play. And it may not mean much that one person is willing to have faith in him, but I do.

Coleman has improved a lot since he got here and i think that is more important than anything else at this level. These guys are trying and the goalie is only as good as the defensemen around him. You guys need to give him a chance...

Hey colsey i'll be on your side... not for pity but I actualy think you have potential and you are a great goalie and forget those loosers (psst... if you read mike hoffmans blog entries and the comments after them most of them are about you and how alot of people think down of you but you know it is sad to see people in their 20's having soo much drama and then having a fifteen year old tell them off and tell them to stop talking down about people and causing drama because if you just fight fire with fire you only get burned and I think that this is a lesson that they need to learn because apparently they haven't already... they need to give you a chance to prove yourself.... and it doesn't matter if you play too much video games instead of practicing as long as you work your hardest and always have fun then you will improve... hey i've proved this it is advice my soccer coach gave me and i followed it and what do you know by the end of the season I had the varsity coach talking to me about being on varsity next year....... (in the beginning of the year the varsity coach would have never considered me as being varsity material..) well I ended up being captain of our team and playing in the homecoming game which is a big pat on the back for me!!! HEY MIRACLES HAPPEN!!! all you need is to maby spend time outside of practice with another player that you are close to and your coach if he they are willing to do that and just run drills... I have faith in you and I know you can do it!!!! good luck
~kayle the 15 year old who has ALOT to say and has alot of faith in this team (i have been watching pirates hockey since I was 3 or 4 years old!!!!) and I will not watch you guys fail(its one thing if you try and fail but if you do not have your heart in the game from the beginning then you are failing not trying and failing just failing...

February 15, 2008 01:30 PM

oh and one more thing I have liked you as a goalie ever since the beginning and I have also seen the best and the worst in you guys..... even though everybody needs a reality check sometimes...... I think you guys need it now more than ever... and slowly but surly you guys will improve... and to this "k" maby you should try playing hockey and then you might know more about the game but i'm not here to bash the people i'm here to give encouragement to the players if they read this.......
but anyways colsey all you guys should get your heads in the game and create a chant that will get you guys pumped instead of bashing each other around and playing loud music...... try a catchy song that you can use in the game like get'cha head in the game by high school musical even though you might get made fun of for it..... if it works then go with it... maby try diffrent songs that will get you pumped and suggest it to the whole team maby the next game I go to it won't be like watching paint dry.... because the other teams seem to be more pumped than you guys!!! (if you take my advice..) but if you don't that is fine .......it is just food for thought.... I love the whole team..... and i hate to see you loose like this (a loosing streak) and maby the coach should try someone else besides miller in the beginning give other people a chance to prove themselves.... maby try switching goalies like put you in to prove yourself and stop scratching and come back give it another try........... and if you fail well you went down with dignity. and you DO have good potential don't listen to the haters and go your own way people will like you for that.. believe me.... (mckenna has to screw up sometime....... and j.p. ..... psst between you and me mckenna seems like he is getting a big head don't cha think? but that is my opinion)

GOD get over your selfs...............and THE FUCKING coaches do what they think is right for the team.... maby COLMAN wasen't suited up but it doesen't mean they think that he FUCKING sucks......... YOU GUYS PRODUCE MORE DRAMA THAT MY FUCKING HIGH SCHOOL DOES IN TEN YEARS...... YOU HAVE PISSED ME OFF ALOT......... GOD................... and this justin guy WAS NOT bragging up colsey and if you have a problem with this tell me........and apparently you guys are not REAL fans....... if you are you wouldn't bash any of their players and i bet you haven't even watched PIRATES hockey all that long....... you should cherish that portland has a ahl hockey team........ YOU traet it like trash.....well maby you need an attitude check all of you exept those who are on colseys side to those people i thank you but to those who are not GROW THE FUCK UP.......GOD.......

GERALD COLEMAN (at left), 22, is in his first full season with the Pirates. He was drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2003. He played in a couple of NHL games for Tampa but saw most of his action with the Lightning's AHL team in Springfield, Mass. He was traded last season to the Anaheim Ducks, parent team of the Pirates. Coleman grew up in Evanston, Ill., and played on the U.S. national team as a teenager. As a member of the London Knights in the Ontario Hockey League, he was on squad that won the Memorial Cup.

MIKE HOFFMAN, 27, took a different path than most hockey players on the Pirates. He graduated from Scituate (Mass.) High 1999, then went to prep school and the United States Hockey League before playing for the University of Connecticut. In the fall of his junior year, Hoffman got a call from his agent asking if he'd like a tryout with the Worcester Ice Cats. Before the first game the coach asked, "Do you fight?" and Hoffman said, "I do now." He had a fight that night against Graham Belak, and according to Hoffman, "that's how my pro career started."
