Good meals and card games

MIKE HOFFMAN

Welcome back everyone, just got back from the Maine Diner. Wow, was that some good food. I went with the lobster pie along with the lobster benedict and topped it off with a brownie sundae. I’m just praying we don’t have a weigh-in Wednesday morning. It’s always nice when you can support a great cause (Gary’s House), meet great people and get a great meal. I knew it was
at a good spot when I saw Weino willing to drive over an hour to get some seafood chowder.

Sitting on the couch watching hockey thinking about my latest gig or need I’ve been looking for. Is there anything better than getting your back scratched or head scratched? I am a believer in getting massages when needed but have you ever been to a spa or salon where there was a head or back scratch on the menu? I think it would be a gold mine. I know some people would think it’d be gross doing it to random people, but I’m currently working on a fingertip invention where they just slip on and attached are the perfect scratching nails. If anyone knows of somewhere or someone I could get what I’m looking for, please let me know.

Got some new video games lately but just can’t get away from Halo 3. I am still curious about this Nintendo Wii craze because you can’t seem to find them anywhere. I was playing cards a few weeks ago and a few 40-something dads were talking about the injuries they got from playing their kids’ Wii, so it’s probably not the best investment for the house. And it’d just cause more house drama on who is the better video gamer (Me, Carter or Salcido). That seems to be the daily house battle, all in good fun though. Although our latest house disagreement was, which movie is more realistic, “Independence Day” or “Transformers?” (I was on the “Independence Day” side. )

Been nice to have another slow week before hitting the road again. Going to be a tough weekend with a three games in three days on the road and I’m not much of a bus sleeper. One thing I look forward to is our card game that goes on in the back of the bus. Shnarples it’s called. Most people have probably never heard of it but basically it’s about suits and one suit is a trump and you try to get the most “tricks.” Somewhat luck, somewhat skill, but makes the rides go by real fast and I got two wins this year. ... I just hope I am winning with skill and not the luck.

Christmas season has officially begun – yep, I’m a last minute shopper, although this year I have most of my gifts picked out. I probably won’t get them till the 24th though. I think it’s partly because I am not the most-organized person in the world and I tend to forget things when traveling so I can be safe and get it when I’m closer to home.

Well I’m off to watch some “Family Guy” and “Man vs. Wild.” Before I leave I have to mention the Patriots and I still don’t think my heart has recovered from Monday night’s game. It won’t be easy from here on out but I still am confident having Tom Brady with the all in his hands going perfect.

Until next time
– Hoff

Mike,
Hey there, I met you briefly after you had your autograph signing a few weeks ago. The very tall brunette, I was wondering if you wanted to get a drink sometime? I don't know how to get in touch with you. I thought I'd try sending a comment.(I've been known to give excellent head massages!)
hehehe!!

I didn't think that my comment was going to make such a stir. I'm not a "Puck Bunny", I'm just a beautiful girl who wanted to get another chance to talk with Mike. What's the big deal??? Goongrl is just the name I use for my fantasy hockey team ( I have won my league 3 years running and Yes I am the only girl in a 20 team league).Plus i'm partial to the tough guys, You know the guys who are unafraid to drop their mitts!!! :)

seems goongirl is pretty full of herself to me... first off thinking she has a chance with hoffman, second calling herself beautiful all the time???? riiight, im a girl who loves hockey too and will be the first to admit when a hockey player is hott (mike mckenna) but she def. sounds like a puck bunny, and i HATE that term!

December 25, 2007 03:32 PM

I'll ask Hoff how beautiful you are when he gets back...

December 26, 2007 01:23 PM

Hoff,

I would like to comment on something other than the Goon Girl. I'm sorry to hear that you broke your hand. You had the most heart on the team. You are just about the only player who emulates what it is to be a Pirate. All of the other players are just waiting for a call to the Ducks. I don't see any heart on the team. I saw Dywer skate away from a fight in Manchester holding his eye like something was wrong with him. They just roll over now and don't fight back. I want to see the Pirates of old that struck fear into the opposing players especially at home. I cant stand seeing an opposing player get off the ice last at the end of warm ups. We need to bring back Gillies and Konopka until you get back to the lineup. Hurry back Hoffman the Pirates are in desperate need of you!

There just cute guys that have a unique skill set that allow them to play the game of hockey. It's not like thay have super natural powers! They eat, sleep and put on their socks like everyone else.

What makes you think i'm not beautiful,k... Good luck on the hunt for Mike Mckenna :)...

WTF, Did you get the chance to ask??? ;)

um ps goongrl, learn to read all i said was u sounded full of urself by calling urself beautiful, just seems to me like ur playing ur self up an awful lot, and also fyi u have a link to ur myspace attached to ur name..... ur not that great looking i hate to break it to ya hunny. and im a realistic person, its not like im gonna go around asking out hockey players who i think are hot, im NOT a puck bunny, i enjoy the game, the players who happen to be hot (as i said mike mckenna) are an added bonus. thanks

i would hope mckenna would get a
shutout how many shots did he face!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by LINDA
January 2, 2008 04:18 PM

15 shots I think without going back and looking it up...I think Lowell had all of 2 scoring chances the whole game...

Posted by Tim
January 2, 2008 05:41 PM

It doesn't matter how many shots he faced. At one point during the game at Orono, Coleman had given up 5 goals on 15 shots. Mckenna is proving to be the number 1 goalie in portland. Hopefully the coaches stick with him because if they do, they will continue to win. Coleman doesn't deserve to be on the same bus as Mike Mckenna! I don't how how you can continuously bash on Mckenna when the pirates are winning most of their games now. He had one lose in the past what 4 games. During those four games he posted a shutout, beat Hartford in a shootout, and has just been playing incredible. Give the guy some credit, he deserves to be the starting goalie!! Give it time and it will be the Mike & Mike blogs. The pirates should just get rid of Coleman and actually pick up some talent.

A hockey puck requires a hard disk of vulcanized rubber. A standard ice hockey puck is black, 1 inch thick , 3 inches in diameter, and weighs between 5.5 and 6 ounces! hehehe

Matt's happier where is now. He likes it better in Bridgeport and hopes to get that call up to the Islanders soon. He's in a better place. I wish him the best of luck.

HEY COLSEY HAS TALENT DID YOU WATCH LAST YEAR??? AND STOP DISSING HIM FOR CRAP.... YES MIKE MCKENNA HAS ALOT OF TALENT BUT COLSEY ALSO DOES JUST WATCH AND YOU'LL SEE THAT iAM RIGHT AND YOU ARE WRONG HAVE YOU EVER TRIED PLAYING GOALIE IN ICE HOCKEY.. I BET YOU HAVEN'T WELL I HAVE IT TAKES ALOT OF HARD WORK BUT IF YOU COMPARE COLSEY TO TIM THOMAS OF THE BOSTON BRUINS COLSEY DEFINATLEY POWNS TIM THOMAS.. TIM... AND K I AGREE WITH YOU THAT THIS GOONGRL IS FULL OFF HERSELF...... BUT MIKE HOFFMAN HAS THE RIGHT TO DATE WHICHEVER GIRL HE CHOOSES AND MABY JUST MABY HE MIGHT LIKE HER WHO KNOWS OMG U PPLS NEED TO STOP THE DRAMA i get enough of it at my school..... and it is very sad that a 15 year old is telling "GROWN UPS" to cut he crap and get over your selfs...... and by "grownups" i mean ppl over tha age of 20. but i do agree mike you need to come back soon hey goongrl i hope you know that yo are not the only FAN of mike hoffman's to have met him i have met him........ he is amazing for what he does it is hard work I play on my high schools team and i am just getting back from a knee injury from he beginning of the year (the second game.) i was playing goalie and this girl shot a blazing shot and i blocked it but a girl from her team was right in front of me and she fell on top of my leg pad and some how it got loose and i did not notice and a person from their team shot it really fast and i blocked it with my unguarded knee and it shattered my knee (this was in tthe last minute of the third period) and even though i am out for the rest of the season i had a great time playing my first 2 games. we went undefeated those two games but now our team is down at the bottom of the list. we have the power to score goals but we lack in the defense and goalie departments.

any ways don't bash ppls if you don't know their strengths and weaknesses ..... colsey and the hoff are amazing. thats all I have to say.

GERALD COLEMAN (at left), 22, is in his first full season with the Pirates. He was drafted by the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2003. He played in a couple of NHL games for Tampa but saw most of his action with the Lightning's AHL team in Springfield, Mass. He was traded last season to the Anaheim Ducks, parent team of the Pirates. Coleman grew up in Evanston, Ill., and played on the U.S. national team as a teenager. As a member of the London Knights in the Ontario Hockey League, he was on squad that won the Memorial Cup.

MIKE HOFFMAN, 27, took a different path than most hockey players on the Pirates. He graduated from Scituate (Mass.) High 1999, then went to prep school and the United States Hockey League before playing for the University of Connecticut. In the fall of his junior year, Hoffman got a call from his agent asking if he'd like a tryout with the Worcester Ice Cats. Before the first game the coach asked, "Do you fight?" and Hoffman said, "I do now." He had a fight that night against Graham Belak, and according to Hoffman, "that's how my pro career started."
